Before we start, I'm a poor college kid so I did the best with what I have to spend. It's not a perfect suit but hopefully for another $50 or so I can get it tailored a little better. I think right now it's a too long and would like it taken shorter a bit (is this even possible?). Also, my sleeves are hemmed up to the button so unfortunately those can't be taken up shorter t show my shirt more. Also, shoulders are a little large but its a 36R and 34's are tough to find. Anything I can do about this? Overall what do you think? How much do you think I spent? Sorry for the poor quality pictures, its a charcoal suit super 150s wool.

I was going to post a thumbs up (for the price/availability) until I saw the back pictures. The bad news is that you will need to spend more than $50 to make this suit fit. I'd avoid cheap alteration tailors that have no idea what they're doing. The good news is that it's possible to make it acceptable.

Great thanks. I had my arms behind me a bit so it wrinkled up more than usual but definitely agree it needs to be taken in.

Thanks!

It's too big. Ironically, the length isn't the worst part (though, the sleeves are too long). The shoulders are too big and that is most apparent in the pics from the back, to acecow's point. That said, you are a poor college kid, and if you did little else, it's still not really that bad (provided you never, ever pose like a scarecrow).

are there real button holes on the sleeves?
or are the buttons just sewn on the surface.

definitely need a tailor to clean it up, but overall not bad. a "value" suit that fits right will always look better than an expensive ill-fitting one. by value, i mean a decent wool fabric at a lower price. polyester and crap wool will always look like crap, even if it fits well.

you are def looking at more than 50 to tailor it properly, probably closer to 80-100. shorten the jacket and sleeves, have it taken in. your sleeves look a little full, too. instead of taking those in, do curls and dips to fill those out.

also, get a dress shirt that fits well, too. your sleeves are too long. idk if you have a second cuff button that you can use to tighten them up at the wrist. i like brooks brothers slim fit with the ainsley semi-spread color. you can specify the correct length(34) instead of the combo sleeve (34/35) with 2 buttons

Who makes the suit? You could potentially sell it and get something else that fits and actually save a considerable amount of money.

Still, I maintain that for a college kid most people will be much, much worse - even if you did nothing.

Thanks a bunch....this is definitely going to help. My buttons were undone so they were hanging down a bit.....when they are buttoned it's a great fit

Good on you for getting a suit. It is always tricky when starting out to get everything 100% spot on. It takes time and experience to reduce the variance of uncertainty.

Suit is too long, but accept that. Altering the length of the jacket should be avoided if possible. I would say you are only an inch too long - that is within tolerance in my opinion. If your length were 32", get 32" although 31" or 33" you can get away with depending on your body shape.

Sleeves and chest (and sides) are easy fixes by any reputable tailor. Shoulders are too big, but dont try do anything here. To alter shoulders basically means rebuilding the whole jacket - much too much work. Just leave it.

Best of luck, hope after alterations suit looks decent. Attach pics to this thread once you get suit altered (Do not start a new thread for that).

Some great advice. I can't thank you enough.

Hopefully SF can help me hone my suit knowledge enough for when I graduate.

Nice job for a first suit. I've seen horrors and this is nothing in comparison.

As others have mentioned above, the back is where the flaws stand out and that's when it becomes a huge piece of fabric and loses its shape. Go to a real tailor (not someone who does alterations at your college's local laundramat). Get the jacket taken in and everything shortened a bit. You can't do the shoulders, it's just too big for you. That said, you'll be able to pull off the suit nicely as you put on a few pounds and hold your shoulders back, and keep good posture to fill that baby in.

Can't go wrong with that color, too.

You asked how much we thought you spent. I have NO idea what a cheap suit costs. The least expensive I've ever seen is like $350, but I suppose you can get a suit for $125. Is that what you paid?

Oh yes, and get those pant legs taken in a bit if you can. They're HUGE.
