The notion of fitness does come from the genetic, "Gatherer/Hunter" where men had to catch and kill their food. This naturally meant that men tended to be fit (or at least run fast)..........

Well put, the whole thing.

One thing I will add, in my opinion whether you are over weight or not, you should still make an attempt to at least have some sort of physical regime. Even if you are battling obesity, it still benefits you. Your heart and lungs will be stronger, you can still gain muscle, etc. Don't do it for others, do it for yourself, for you own well being. Even if you don't go to the gym hard, go for an hour and sweat a bit. Its also good for you mentally.

This is something that I totally agree with. I think that lack of understanding, the media and mis-information has caused the current state of overweight people.

People are trying to be fit for the "wrong" reasons. It's not really about looking good in clothes, but more, as you've said, about prolonging live. If the media had of concentrated on this more, rather than what celebrity looks like, then perhaps less people would feel so bad about themselves that they turn to addictions (such as food, drink, drugs, clothes, shoes.....) just to get through the day.

I "get it" now in my forties, but when I used to go to the gym, I hated it, because I didn't understand (and/or accept) that this will help me in later life. Being a skinny guy, I ate what I wanted like a horse. Now, I have to watch most of what I eat.

George Bernard Shaw is reputed to have said:

"Youth is wasted on the Young"

How true is that (at least for me).

We have had this discussion a hundred times on SF. You can be fat, even obese, and very healthy.when I was obese, I had great blood pressure and great blood chemistry, and lifted weights and practiced martial arts. I know a lot of fat people who are prettu healthy.

I think we are all in agreement that there are a lot of good reasons for being fit. But there is a weak argument for suggesting a person invest a lot of time and effort so that other people don't have to see their fat.

I wonder if I should pull a De Niro and gain a whole bunch of weight to prove or disprove the various points in this thread.

How high should I go? The Biggest Loser territory?

I far prefer being overweight to being skinny, even if I'm a couple inches larger in the waist it's definitely worth it. I don't understand why any man would want to have a neck narrower than his head. But the only things I own which might count as "nice clothes" are a couple pairs of Western boots.

I couldn't agree more.. The narrow waists and tiny little bums in the Abercrombie jeans are just, disturbing..

If I was 20 pounds overweight no suit could hide it, really depends on your frame. The kind of stuff I wear looks better on the very skinny, some stuff looks better on bigger guys, almost nothing looks good on meat heads without some tinkering/reframing. Tan, super fit dudes in their 30s and 40s just look creepy. If you got a six pack it's time to eat some fried chicken you ***, you look like a ridiculous chest-shaver.

True, but I am not aware of too many gym meatheads of the female variety, must just be where I live..

Naturally, since that is doubling your weight.

Please, please, nobody post that picture of the Abercrombie CEO wearing the blue polo and distressed jeans.

Please.
