I know that feel bro. Did some seated db shoulder presses in front of a mirror at my friend's gym... saw all sorts of shit going on in my triceps I've never seen before.

Body building vs. strength training. Can you actually be stronger without being as big as a body building specific workout would make you or will you always have the same muscle mass for a given strength level?

And can someone please debunk some bro math because it's bugging me. If a pound of fat stores roughly 3500 calories and a pound of muscle is like 600 or whatever, why can't I theoretically eat a 2900 calorie deficit and burn a pound of fat while putting on muscle without changing weight? That would assume 100% efficiency, but even still there's room for a margin of error that would suggest you could eat at a slight deficit and not lose weight if you were sufficiently fat and dyel.

I was just sitting at a meeting when I realized I have a small gut. Fucking disgusting. And I still have 5 more lbs to go to hit my bulk goal.

    this is correct.

just seen so much horrible instruction on the net i'm a bit jaded. also more than a bit hungover too.

yeah, casual acquaintances' opinions really don't matter.

just wait until you get that IB internship, if my friends' hours are anything to go by taking the time to lift 4-5 times a wk may prove to be a worthy task.

    Haha, this is me.

Loving the facial aesthetics you get sub 10 bf and girls def look at you differently than when I was around 15%, but I'm feeling tiny now.
Looking forward to gaining some mass. Only a week left of cutting now.

About the training (this could be wrong, others with more experience can chime in):
The short answer is that if you want to build strength but not much size, you should do a program with low reps, very heavy weight with a strong focus on the major barbell compound lifts. 3 sets of 3 to 8 reps or something like that. Squats, deadlifts, pendlay rows, pull ups, bench press. If you don't want size, you should stay away from hypertrophy workouts, which usually are a ton of assistance lifts with 8-15 reps and 3 to 5 sets. Those build more size. Of course, you will be getting some size on either program as you get stronger but a pure strength focus will build less.

If you're doing IA SPBR, that is fine. Just focus on increasing the weight on the first major compound lift of the day for every workout and do the assistance with perfect form and increase the weight only when you can do so cleanly.

    About the calories:
At your level, you can def eat at a deficit and make gains. I've trained seriously for a year and on this cut (about -3000 calories a week), I've made some strength gains. I've shrunk in size, as is expected on a cut.

I may be alone on this, but I think most guys should start by cutting down to a respectable bodyfat (usually around 10-11%) and then start a bulk from there. It usually makes them a lot more motivated and gets them their wanted physique faster (which usually is "muscular but not too bulky"). If your a newbie, you will make gains no matter if you eat 2500 or 3500 calories a day.

IB internships are stupid. IB SA's get abused as like a rite of initiation. I'm skipping the whole Analyst thing and getting in after b-school at the associate level, or going into PE right away. Fuck 120 hour work weeks.

Elites in both camps are pretty fucking big. Whether you are doing 225x10 or 315x1 you need muscle mass to move it. Dont forget, w/lower body fat you "look bigger". If powerlifters shredded like bodybuilders they would look the same, most likely. Maybe bigger cores.

When you are in a caloric deficit your body prioritizes survival. Hypertrophy is a luxury. Lot of other things we take for granted (sex drive being the most obvious ones) are luxuries afforded by caloric surpluses. When you go in a deficit all that shit shuts down. You might be able to keep some hypertrophic momentum for the first 2-3 weeks of a cut, but eventually your body catches on and shuts shit down appropriately. The best one can hope for in a cut is to maintain muscle. And even then, you're gonna be glycogen depleted and incapable of maintaining the same training volume.

I think the best way to go is just carefully bulk up to the strength/size you want to be, cut, and maintain. The annual bulk/cut cycle for Joe Sixpack makes no sense to me now, you wind up going in circles.

The life of an MBA associate in IB is not that much better than that of an analyst, at least not initially. In fact, at many banks, the MBA associates get staffed as analysts for the first 9-12 months. If it were me, I would probably either start as an analyst and go straight through (which I did) or do an MBA and go into PE.
