    I'm shopping right now for a 70s Nova v8. Got two that I'm looking at in the $3,000-$4,000 price range. Know it's not RHET but still MUSCULAR as fuck and will be perfect to throw my gym bag in and tear ass to the gym in.

    For me, it was more the case of not knowing how the excercises should be performed and wasn't aware of the risks of not doing them correctly. I simply thought a squat was a squat. I'm in no hurry to get big or strong since I know that'll come eventually, but it's also very difficult to know when your technique is good enough if you coach yourself. I believe this is true for many non-bro new lifters.

    Anyway, if I have a problem recruiting the core, getting below parallel while staying upright, maybe I should swap the back squat for the front squat for some time? When I can move decent weight on the front squat (thinking over BW on the bar) with proper form, I can start back squatting again?

    Yeah I'd work with front squats for a while. I actually tend to keep new athletes away from back squats until their front squats look good. Harder to get yourself in trouble front squatting.

    Meanwhile work on mobility. Foam rolling then stretching 4x week if you can afford.

    Yea srsly. Looked at darts, there's only one in my area and the dude put some carbon fiber shit on the dashboard.. ruined it.

    I lifted in college without any concern for form or technique, and fortunately didn't injure myself, but I now realize the risks of that approach. So when I started working out again last year, I decided to hire a coach. The best decision ever, as far as my fitness is concerned. I have strayed from good technique a few times when working out on my own and caused a few minor injuries as a result, so I'm now focusing on good technique at all times with or without the trainer present. I'm seeing gains and as of late haven't had any injuries. Adding the yoga practice is helping too, especially with mobility.

    I'm living in pretty small university town and while there are a lot of gyms here, the coaches don't know shit. Either they're full-on bro's doing squats in the smith rack with as many plates as possible with terrible form and depth or they're those guys concerned with "functionality". They've posted this "functional circuit workout" on the walls of the gym. It has pictures of the coaches doing various "functional" exercises, such as half rom overhead squat without arms fully overhead, pull-ups without chest touching the bar, bosu ball stuff, etc...     I'm thinking of hiring an online coach though. Ex seems good from what I've heard and doesn't charge a lot.

    Just video tape all your lifts. You can fix it yourself, there's enough information out on the internet. Decide what coach teaching method you like the best and just stick with his advice.

    i will be the first guy to say ex clearly knows his shit and has a lifetime of experience. if you want to shut your brain off, put some hard work in and get results, that's what you'll get. especially for the majority of people in this thread; we are all mostly in that late beginner or approaching intermediate stage and with an overabundance of routines and crap out there on the net, there is a tendency to overthink things instead of properly valuing hard work and consistency over all other things. however, as far as being taught to fish versus being given a fish, you're certainly being given a fish. results are the most important thing, yes, but outside of being given routines and seeing how things are structured, you won't learn much about how to go forward after you are done training with him which may or may not be important to you. with that being said, at least for that first 3-7 months, the marginal utility is extremely worthwhile. you will make great progress and will feel like you've been kicked in the balls repeatedly, but you'll guaranteed be bigger and stronger. at that point, it would be wise to re-evaluate your goals and see if it is worth it to continue.
