    I've been on 5/3/1 for 1.5 years now, I am thinking of moving to westside. On paper it seems a little confusing so I want to write down my understanding of it, if anyone has a correction please help me out:

    Day 1 Max Effort Lower
    Squat/Deadlift (alternated each week) 1RM
    Start at a relatively light weight for warm-up and do sets of 3 until I'm at my 1 RM weight. Then I proceed to do 3 work sets of 1 rep with that weight. Last set try to get up to 3 reps? Rest period is as needed

    3 or 4 assistance exercises focused on my lower body weakpoints done at 3x8-12

    Day 2 ME Upper
    Bench/DB bench/incline/decline 1 RM
    Same as squat/deadlift protocol. Start at warm-up weight and do sets of 3 adding weight each time until I am at my 1 RM weight. Then 3 work sets of 1 or so, go for 3 reps on my last set. Rest period as needed
    3 or 4 assistance exercises focused on upper body weakpoints, 3x8-12


    Day 3 DE Lower
    Speed squats/dl whatever the exercise is for the week (9 sets of 2, done explosively with 50-60% of 1RM )
    Assistance work same as ME day 1 minute rest

    Day 4 DE Upper
    Speed bench/incline/db or whatever the exercises is for the week (9 sets of 3 , 50-60% of ME 1RM )
    Assistance work same as ME day 1 minute rest


    And overall, the mesocycle might look like:
    week 1 squat/bench with DE days using 55% of my 1RM weight
    week 2 deadlift/incline bench, DE day using 60% of 1RM weight
    week 3 squat/bench, DE days at 65% of 1rm

    then recalibrate the program to my new 1RMs and start again at 55%?

    I don't know if this will help you, but I feel like typing up a story, so here goes:

    There is a new guy at my gym. I had a conversation with him a few days ago where he told me all his numbers (I never asked to hear them) and then asked me my training schedule. I told him the days I train. He said he's looking for someone to train powerlifting, I decided to stick around and listen to him further. He asked me if I do speed days, max effort days, etc. I told him no. He was shocked. He told me "Man, you gotta do speed work, thats how you get strong." I said "ok." He asked me my days again, I told him I have 2 "leg" days and 2 push/pull. He asked me if I do speed work again, I said no.

    I said to him: "It sounds to me like you follow westside" He replied with "yes but actually Laura Phelps writes my programs" (he is a recent transplant from Cincinnati). Then he talked about Laura Phelps, and despite the fact that I told him "Yes I know of that man" he continued to talk about her and how explosive she is. He then said "well if you want to train we should work something out, there's not many people into powerlifting here and so it'd be conducive to our training." I told him "Well, yeah man, let me know your schedule as far as when you are here and we can figure something out, but I don't train westside and do not plan on doing it ever because I don't agree with 70% of what Louie says."

    I then saw him warm up with a bar hitting his squats 3" above parallel.





    Moral of the story? Don't be like that guy.
