This rings true for me. I've got a few modes which are sort of at odds with each other. I jump back and forth between formal and casual, and 'classic' and 'modern', sometimes blend them. One thing I've been doing recently is narrow down to a very minimal color palette: gray, white, navy and some black. (purging a bunch of brown/earth tones). At least that can help with continuity across the modes. I figure if I have a good base, I can play with shape and silhouette or odd designs but still retain my general look. still doesn't always resolve the casual/formal dilemma, but it helps feel more coherent.

    i'm not mean :embar:
i just am disillusioned by this place, my limited attention span can't handle the repetitive nature, mindless mass consumption and the subsequent awful displays of incoherence and poor taste, and disregard for those aiming to genuinely succeed. i'd rather look at assassins and bearded women in drapery over on SZ than continue with this madness

if BigSkipp can come back with a bang, he's just one coat away from it, I will feel at ease. but you're all driving him away from his salient return. chivalry is dead. swd is dead. a soulless carcass of a once beautiful being. i shall soon gather my belongings, the departing train has left, the road leading beyond the lush green hills is a long and lonely journey. i will keep you all in my hearts forever though. but i will do my best to forget your mongrels you spammed these threads with, i don't care for your furry companions one bit. for that i go to Daily Squee http://squee.icanhascheezburger.com/

    -----------------------

news from the greek front : he has been attempting to return but there is some sort of IP scanning system in place able to quickly sniff him out with each account creation. he managed to send me a letter before he was eliminated last time.

I fear it may be too late. But perhaps there is yet hope for him !

Shah I get what you're saying completely, i do feel hints of disgust bubbling up inside me as well at much that I see, even outside of the mr porter/sale season frenzy which doesn't actually phase me.

But just look at those two PM's! The drama!

There are really weird politics at play here, and bizarre senses of entitlement across all spectrums.

I think if I was made a moderator I could restore all order and bring some fun back :D

I took one sewing class more than a year ago and it was awful. It put me off learning to sew for a while. If I were to do it again, I would go take a proper class at a place like Parsons or FIT here in New York. I've taught myself plenty of things in the past though, and I'd like to try it with sewing before I spend money on a class. Here are two books that I've heard are really good:

Patternmaking for Fashion Design (5th Edition)

The New Complete Guide to Sewing: Step-by-Step Techniques for Making Clothes and Home Accessories Updated Edition with All-New Projects and Simplicity Patterns

EDIT: Also, I'm finding more of interest here lately since the creation of the designer threads. That's why I want to see Ann D. and Undercover threads. Maybe I'll just have to make the Ann D. thread if no one else will, but I don't know if I'll have time for a little while.

I spent my trip to disney world wearing a NYY fitted , knockoff wayfarers, a hanes v, NFxMomos and pair of a-lifes and couldn't have been happier. Then again, I was at disney world with my girlfriend, so that might have been it.

But still, wearing slacks and a button up every day to work makes it easier to find joy in the simplest of SW&D getups. I've been wearing my ToJ nonstop for the past year and yet leather/t-shirt/jeans/boots or sneakers is still a blast to wear.

Then again, i'm nowhere near synthese's level in terms of passion re: clothing. Perhaps redirect that energy somewhere else? I just found a gaming store near my apartment. D&D 4e is really fun.

It seems like we are of the same mind once again. Overall, I still feel like it's on the upswing though.

But that Heirloom pic is unreal, how can SF compete...

Agreed, thanks for the link Shah. I haven't been browsing SZ much lately so I skipped it, but that's probably one of the best fits I've ever seen from any forum.

Heirloom always delivers, but that might be the best ever.

I just hemmed the shit out of some cotton trousers, they are now perfect. It feels super good to sit down and go through everything meticulously: chalk, cut, iron, pin, sew; take your time with it; and then end up happy.

the express trains the direct trains the trains headed
for eternity and death depart at fifteen past the 199th hour
at two past the zero hour, but where do they go? they go.
the rest is the secret of the second life, if there is one, there
lies the mystery, the everlasting question. they leave for
remote and unknowable destinations. the staionmaster
sounds the blessed whistle, the locomotive starts up and puffs
smoke, the windows are illuminated, the chefs on the international
lines rush to and fro in a flurry of excitement, toscanini
is here, marilyn is on board,
einstein has just arrived, not to mention henry magritte,
    hurry hurry, we're headed toward

toward far-off places. toward adventure. toward... toward...
    - you mean toward life?
    - no, no sorry. all i mean is the steam, the smoke,
    the speed.
the direct trains the express trains the trains headed for eternity

leave at the 2000th hour, at 2:30, at 23:30,
at scheduled times now lost forever, everything in its place,
the boilers brimming with splendid steam. go! go!
    they don't leave.
    they'll never leave.
they are the trains of the dead.
