it's the random fashion thread on SF not a serious intellectual discussion - obviously what im typing is hyperbole. i like some theory, but i think that a lot of bleeding edge publications in the humanities are way too jargonistic and are written for a very tiny in-crowd. the works that i find most interesting (and most useful) use new theoretical categories in an approachable, relevant way.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean they won't have to tackle in one way or another gay imagery, it's just so present there is no getting out of it once you're into fashion, be it lumberjack wear or Givenchy hype faggotry.

i'm just waiting for the day when the reemergence of men's fashion collapses under its own self-referential pretentiousness and all of our favorite broggers are out of business

well im a history grad student and history is a conservative anti-intellectual field so that's probably some of it. but there's a big mix. most people ive met in grad school are either like 22 and horrible human beings who have no personal lives/interests beyond their program, or like 35 year olds who are going back to school and are fun to talk to and drink with.

Not to get too strident or anything, but do you think the appropriate response to repression is to become a willing accomplice?
