don't say that, i can't afford to believe you.

Don't buy sh's explanation of "silk as protein" because they'd label it that way. If anything, there's been a bit in the news lately of designers using milk protein for fabric blends. Penn & Teller even interviewed this German designer about it on their show a few weeks back.

I definitely agree that our habits and their context are worth talking about. I just don't think fashion blogs do very much of that (at least not the ones I've seen, so please feel free to point me to some that do). Those discussions may come up every so often, but they're not really what the blogs are about, which is generally clothing/photos the blogger likes. So acting like fashion blogs are about sociology as much as clothing is disingenuous. I also think it hints at an underlying sense of embarrassment. Posts like the one you linked to read like apologias for blogging about clothes. They suggest there's something slightly shameful in liking and paying attention to clothing, that they have to defend themselves against accusations that they're frivolous and superficial by showing how they're really thinking about deep, important things. But the majority of the time they're not thinking about deep, important things. I think people should like what they like and spend their time how they choose without apology, and shouldn't bother with dishonest justifications for doing so.
My favorite part is "wisdom molting into instinct." I'm not sure what exactly wisdom would need to shed (like a snakeskin) to become instinct—knowledge? consciousness? something else that a person can't really do without?

I agree with almost everything here, most fashion blogs are exactly what you're saying. There are, of course, a few exceptions here and there. It's why I largely read fashion blogs that consider themselves 'feminist' - they tend to offer a little more insight than the typical "HYPE SWAG STEEZ #menswear" tumblr thing. If you're honestly interested I'll pm you some links.

As for the self-justifying thing, I think that in an ideal world you'd be right. There should be nothing shameful about having an interest in fashion, clothes, etc. But I do think a lot of people, guys especially, do feel some shame about it. Fuuma seems to really get this, he has a few old posts about workwear and masking an interest in clothes with bullshit. It's not limited to guys, though. I think there's a general perception that Fashion is just pretty **** for dumb girls and queers. TBH I would love to just say **** the haters and go on liking clothes the way I do, but there's a larger problem of people trivializing things that are traditionally feminine. Making apologies or justification might be playing into that mindset, but IMO it's necessary for the time being.

And please note how that blog post has shaped our discourse, at least temporarily.

I think the stark is really popular every year and I'm sure will continue to be. There's no chunky knit that comes close to matching its unique look, quality, and affordability combination. I don't think it's hype
