Aw, crap. Apologies to robinsongreen; I didn't mean to crap on your rec like that; I really thought I was posting on my other forum (where that wouldn't have been rude).

Actually, I'd recommend Ben Marcus to anyone.

    Additionally:

E Unibus Pluram (2), an essay by David Foster Wallace, and of course Infinite Jest, if you haven't already.

William Vollmann's The Rainbow Stories, a genre-defying work that can be read in chunks; also The Atlas, a massive book made up of his briefer stories and journalism (also kind of a Whitman sampler of his many styles).

Evan Dara is criminally overlooked, and also amazing. The Lost Scrapbook is divine.

For short fiction, try the collected stories of Lydia Davis, Flying Leap, by Judy Budnitz, and anything by Gary Lutz.

On the web site HTMLGiant, you'll find a growing community of writers who are maybe the antidote to the more recognized, realist trends in US fiction right now (the Franzens, the Eugenides, etc.)

    I'll just stop myself there...

...though I can't help but say you should go out right now and buy any novel you can find by Reinaldo Arenas (particularly The Palace of the White Skunks). Simply the best writer ever.

    (Also how cool is Sebald?)

    you mean these?

the black pair is only stocked here as far as i'm aware and they have a 20% off code for mmm now (and 30% for a lot of other brands) but they refuse to take off VAT! Is it even legal for them to do so?
