I need to shave my head give away all my worldly possessions and go around preaching to the masses about freeing themselves from the amorphous blob.

I have no real opinion on social sciences as I never partook of it in school and have never been terribly interested. Hence I am predisposed to scorning it by some reflex assumedly borne of a lack of understanding. I feel like this condition is probably not uncommon among the mainstre - OH SHIT THE AMORPHOUS BLOB HAS CONSUMED ME

It's a meaningless sentence. He basically says any "task" has people distributed accross the bell curve (no). What is a "task", like picking up dogshit? He then refers to behaviour (not the same as a task by any mean) for added "Idon'tknowshitness".

In other words it's not because some guy on a forum says something (totally stupid) that you guys need to pick it up instead of picking it appart.

If you take something like cultural capital (for example) it wasn't really a merit-based structure but more of a class reproduction structure (back when Bourdieu wrote about it) and was distributed in a pyramidal way (not a bell curve). In other words it is not a god-given absolute that the middle classes will form the bulk of a given society along some sort of bell curve with the higher and lower classes on the side, many societies are distributed very differently. This is one of the million of examples showing that the post was full of crap.

Sometimes I think you say things in a cryptic, indirect way so as to deliberately not be understood.

He's commenting on the way folks eagerly embraced the bell curve argument instead of challenging it.

And intuitive as the argument itself sounds, that book has been trashed in many an academic circle. I haven't looked into it much myself but support for the "bell curve" is far from unanimous

Well, it seemed to me people were more sarcastically mocking these ideas than embracing them, but even assuming they did, that's no excuse for inflicting that sentence on us.

And on that day, he became the Internet Message Board Writing Avenger...

EDIT: Also can I just say I very much enjoy when Fok gets involved in these little debates.

WTF? A bell curve is a representation of normal statistical distribution and is not up for debate. Not to be confused with The Bell Curve, the shitty book

I wasn't discussing the ideological garbage that is the bell curve (the book/ but the association of the the bell curve aka normal statistical distribution with the concepts seen in horse's ass post.

Seriously, guys, can't we let this go and move on to something more SF appropriate. Now I was checking out the new arrivals on Mr. Porter and they got me thinking about Weber's idea of the Protestant work ethic...
