Boat shoes occupy that space of "cheap, not a sneaker shoe that is still casual and thus easy to wear with a casual outfit without looking silly." They're also a trend. God forbid people buy into hype, because SF'ers are so immune to that. A lot of my hipstery friends wear suede drivers actually. Drivers are far more offensive (and heinous) than boat shoes. Of course I can't stand sperrys as they look so flimsy and shapeless. Quoddys are superb on the other hand and you ain't gonna be wearin lace ups by the pool or in 115 deg heat. My buddy who is a cheap ass just bought ferragamo drivers and was so excited about them, suede had no nap and felt like 80 grit sandpaper (abysmal detailing aside).
