Oh ok. Well here's your answer. I like Ervell's more adventurous outerwear, I recently fell in love with SS10 and FW11 Dries, and I love older MMM. This is because
i know it is but i don't know how to describe it.

Ervell is pretty obvious imho. I mean his stuff is consistent enough season to season that it's actually an easy target for people on SZ who want to flex their pretentious-muscle to use as a whipping boy of what's "mundane" about fashion week. That being said I'll leave it to someone else to explain them as none of them are particularly my favourites though I do like pieces from each of them, especially MMM.

no it's just a collection of designers i don't get. i'm grouping them by the virtue that they're a little bit less "clear" than gucci or jil or ro. i'm not trying to be rhetorical or clever

What do you mean by "clear" though ?

Synth's jkt is from CK collection !

do you mean contextual appeal/ background? or do you mean aesthetic appeal? As in, "why should I like Margiela?" or "Why does Margiela look good?" I like Margiela because in my mind a lot of the good stuff is an embodiment of cinema du look. It's just cool , in a gun and a girl kind of way. MMM could have done the whole wardrobe from Diva. There's a lot of romance in some of the pieces. yeah my jacket's from motherfucking italy ok, that means it must be good or maybe it was made by a guy whose name sounds like italy who gives a fuck

more the first. like, what is the "idea" behind the designer's aesthetic. Gucci is all about being sexy, Jil. is kind of minimal/modern, that sort of thing.

that explination of MMM was the sort of thing i was looking for. thanks!

Ervell is about being Ervell, year after year. I say this being a fan. I don't think there's ever been a consistent message he's really tried to push beyond what he finds aesthetically pleasing. He said this FW was inspired a military jumpsuit he found; reappropriating functionality for fashunz (the same message fashion always uses when they push a militaristic look). SS11 he had models walk on stacked newspapers that slowly disintegrated as they went. People thought he was being metaphorical but he just thought the color was cool.

MMM is about being cool or clever/smartass or both, depending on the collection.

Dries, I can't really even say since I've only started paying attention. Based on his last two collections, similar to Geller in his Euro sensibility, but with a much more modern fuck-off vibe.

Is your question based on stuff you've seen people here or have you gone to the store and viewed the slides on the website? re: mmm and dries

primarily via SF/Selectism and webstores. i've looked at the websites and the runway shows to get a sense but i haven't checked out the stores. I'm not really acquainted with clothing as a visual language so i feel like a lot is being lost on me. I'm very much the type of person who has trouble "getting" stuff without a framework of analysis.

also, jet, you sometimes make the distinction between "new" mmm and "old" mmm so i was wondering whether they changed directions or what.

Black skinny shiny cool swag. Repeat those words over and over, paint them on the ceiling over your bed.

exactly. margiela is sly, smirking, dirty irreverence. thematically, its nothing as overt and easy to pin down as the designers/labels working within a more specific aesthetic (gothninja, futuristic, workwear, etc), but it absolutely breathes through the statement pieces and especially the runway looks/shows.
