What is the stylistic/practical purpose of the ribbed knit hem for sweaters? IME, unless the sweater is at the exact right length, the ribbed hem just creates a weird poof.
the ribbed hem is stable.
stockinette (the usual 'body' pattern) will curl out and up if it's run all the way to the hem, particularly with wool (not so much with linen on the other hand). that's why the bottom hem, cuffs, and neckline are often ribbed - so it stays flat against the wearer and true to length.
cardigans often have a turned hem which you can do with a pullover too. dunno why you don't see it more often but it's out there... there are other ways of dealing with the hems as well.
one thing you can do to tame the poof is soak and block your knits. that'll take some of the piss out of the yarn.
