Agree it's hard to go wrong with food/ drink, if only because almost everyone loves wine, chocolate, etc. But I feel like you don't really hit the high notes that you sometimes hope to hit. You'll never go wrong with those things, but you also probably won't knock the person off their feet.

I have no idea how anyone ever finds a good Christmas gift. This is literally the most impossible task in the world and you have to do it for a bunch of people.
This is the most fun task of the year, I think. I sorta keep mental tabs of stuff that people mention that they like but is too much of an indulgence for them - it's typically something expensive, just not in the category of things they are willing to spend on, but would like. For my wife, I actually did go spendy, and got her a nice watch, but otherwise, less expensive stuff like candles, cashmere lounge clothes, slippers, stuff like that.

Ok, but now pretend you mostly ignore what people are saying to you, waiting for your turn to talk about yourself. How would you pick gifts then?

Vox has a nice opening to his gift guide from a few years ago:

My family and friends tell me that they find it very difficult to get gifts for me, despite hints that I give them, such as, “Get me something that I like,” and, “Don’t bother getting me anything if it’s going to be crap.”

I like how Fok's gift options are either a Jaeger-LeCoultre or a pair of bath slippers.
