The May 1st date was connected to the Haymarket Affair, which was a working class rally in Chicago where anarchists threw a bomb and killed some people. President Cleveland at the time feared putting the national holiday on May 1st -- which has also become a sort of international workers rights day -- would give communists and anarchists a chance to rally in the US. So the official holiday is in September.
