Thanks for the suggestions everybody, there's definitely some good ideas for me to look into. In particular I'm liking the RW Postman and the Church's that @OccultaVexillum posted, those are both the sort of shoe I'm looking for.

I have two pairs of Paraboot boots, and I like 'em a bunch. I hadn't considered them for chunky derbies though because the offerings in that style either seem too dressy, or are a Tyrolean style which I don't like very much. Their main factory and outlet store are actually pretty close to where I live though, so I should pop over to check things out in person.

I spoke too soon about Paraboot derbies being too dressy. I took another look at the site, and there's a model that looks reeeaaaallly similar to the Doc 1461, with a slightly less bulbous toebox. Pretty sure I'll end up buying these (even though I'm *really* liking those Church's):

huh, i've wanted to buy a pair of heschung ormes but haven't been able to locate a pair in my size (and in the color i want). now i'm considering those arles derbies as an alternative.

@bencap i think I might give the Schemes a condition this weekend. Just neutral shoe cream.
Are they natural? If so, consider cleaning them with a little Fiebings saddle soap. It even cleaned the dirty white midsole of my natural leather Victory runners, and it conditions the leather.

I really like Hender Scheme's aesthetic, but I'm pretty sure they don't make anywhere close to my size (US 13.5).

Clark’s Wallabees might be a fun option - kinda.

those Docs are really very lightweight for how they wear, that aspect seems like it would be hard to replace.

but the postman with the crepe sole seems like it may not wear too much heavier

yeah the archie II is a little slimmer of a profile and super lightweight. the leather on those are way nicer than any other docs I've had (including any EG collabs, mono, regular 1461, etc.)

The postman sole is much more dense than you might think.... plus if you purchase through a RW dealer you get $75 resoles for life on the shoe

Nordstrom Rack always has Postmans for pretty cheap, they're mostly factory seconds but sometimes they have regulars.
I just took a look and there's brown leather, charcoal suede, black leather... about $130 a pair

Another option, which is admittedly pretty different, but i've always liked the Yuketen ripple sole derbies.

What is Sruli Recht’s story of woe and tragedy?

That green Paraboot tag seems wrong on a black derby. Otherwise I like this a lot.
