They are a bit of an acquired taste. I like them but not obsessively.

As far as YouTube covers I happen to be partial to this FNM confectionary concoction.

Bringing it back to the Goth/Peter Murphy discussion earlier:

I saw NIN open for Bowie, instead of a set break they just started trading musicians, the swap ended with Bowie’s band backing Trent and Bowie playing sax and then Trent playing keyboard for Bowie.
I still have a bootleg some where of the Bowie set, it ends with Trent singing Scary Monsters and Bowie singing Hurt.

The self destruct tour and nin/bowie that followed looked so damn cool. I did not get to attend those but I’ve seen NIN live 9 times. Last 2 in sf were fantastic.

Murphy is singing and NIN song FYI.

This dismissal of 90s music is stupid.

You had all those droning acts like Mogwai, Godspeed you black emperor etc.
Trip hop if you're into that (the number of people who had sex to Portishead is mind boggling)
Sonic youth kept releasing good stuff and grunge bands followed up
Pavement, Primal scream :)
Silver Jews were around (RIP)
All these kinda upper middle brow bands electro acts like Boards of Canada, Amon Tobin or Autechre released their best inputs.
Techno as we know it emerged and hip hop became ascendant
Blur, Pulp and all those brit assholes
Church burning Norwegians invented black metal
Shoegaze with My bloody valentine and assorted acts

Black metal was "invented" by Swedish, English and Danish bands in the 80s, but whatevs... ?

Sure, but reached notoriety , as well as establishing the archetypical sound, with the second wave. Never liked the first wave stuff myself, too much heavy metal.

Pink Floyd was a huge part of my musical upbringing but I never play them anymore. Too introspective and, hate to say it, overblown and boring to me now. Radiohead kind of fit the same pattern which is why I think that, while I really liked them, I was only cursorily interested.

Dept of Aging: now into Neko Case, Ray LaMontagne, Decemberists, New Pornographers, Death Cab, Brandi Carlisle and all those awesome young alt-Country/Americana female musicians out now. Hard to name a current rock band that's of interest. Black Keys are fun but really derivative. I guess Jack White stands out.

Earplugs: I bring them everywhere. Earasers are the best sounding off the shelf brand, though they might not block as much sound as they should for rock shows. My custom ones from the ENT doc have been unbeatable for sound and protection, though other people don't like that type for various reasons (perceived sound, $$$$). Either way, protect yourself, y'all.

The loudest shows I've seen are my bloody valentine and swans. Earplugs are not enough at a swans show.

Fashion: I'm in Ashe County NC this weekend and it's still 2005 out here. West Jefferson has two boot/Carhartt type stores and a camping clothing store on main street, plus a guitar shop. Old guys with questionable facial hair abound.
