You’re a braver man than me. My wife would never agree to paying $200 for a pair of trousers or a shirt. I doubt she owns any article of clothing (including shoes and coats) that cost that much unless I bought them.

My wife’s reactions range from wondering why I am interested in clothes at all and annoyance.

Luckily she gets it. I buy her a lot of menswear stuff to wear, and she is a big fan of Elizabeth Suzann and the like, so we have a bit of a shared understanding of why things cost so much.

Just a side note: big knits, oversized shirts, and voluminous pants work really nicely as unisex garments

Luckily we're doing basically fine financially, but we recently sat down and did a budget and that helped us both be on the same page. Still feel somewhat embarrassed by some of my purchases, considering how much more I spend on myself than she spends on herself :-/

Same in my house with ex-farm girl wife. All the nicest stuff in her closet is from me.

@troika We maintain a rough sense of our budget and what would be considered an outsize purchase, anything below that we don't really run by one another unless we want to. I've reigned my spending in quite a bit this year since we purchased a home (that said, did buy an MTM jacket, GMTO cordovan shoes, and purchased a dinner jacket). Neither of us grew up with much, though her less than me. That said, she's never really said no, she likes seeing me wear my clothes and has expanded her taste and styles to reflect some of mine. She has a keen sense of style so when I'm on the fence about a pricey item I often run it by her to see if it clicks for her. I buy her stuff from 18 East or other similar brands time to time, which tend to be the more expensive items in her wardrobe - or, as you said, we share or I can give some of my lesser worn or shrunk down items to her (she's wearing goreckis today and wore an Epaulet chore coat she was too sad to see me donate the other day). My wife does most of her shopping on Amazon but has a growing appreciation of textiles and original designs so I see her doing more designer shopping in the future. @ghdvfddzgzdzg thanks for the Stature tip, showed my wife last night and it blew her mind.

Local.MX is a great resource if you know a basic amount of spanish. However I know so many amazing places there. If you like cool small publisher and books, Casa Bosques is a great place. If you are there for a Saturday hit up the Lagunilla Antique market, absolutely amazing vintage from all over Mexico. Mexico City has a ton of mid-century design that it's hard not to find something to do. Also you can check out El Culto which is a punk/metal swap meet that is goofy as hell, but it's right next to the famous Vasconcelos library. I would also make a reservation to go see Luis Barragan's house.

My favorite bougie restaurants are:
El Expendio de Maiz Sin Nombre (Experimental no menu dishes in a old school style kitchen, it literally has like 10 seats)
Bosforo (Technically not a restaurant but has the best Mezcal in the city and next to it is a nameless restaurant serving pre-columbian inspired dishes)
Rosetta, not fully Mexican but very creative dishes using locally sourced items.
Paramo (right above El Expendio)
Tamales Madre (Amazing tamales using interesting combinations both sweet and savoury)

Not Bougie:
Go to San Angel and find some tacos de canasta
Tacos Arabes and Tacos de al Pastor, there are so many places that you'll never find a straight answer of where to get some however in historic core there are a lot of good places.
Quesadilla sin queso (The rest of the republic makes fun of them for it since it just doesn't make sense but why the hell not)
Cafe Tacuba (one of the older restaurants, if not the oldest, in Mexico City)

Mexico City is not my favorite place in Mexico, but it's undeniably the most full of energy. I spent some time there and although I would probably never live there, it will always have a charm and creative energy that I will always love.

That’s pretty much it. Funny enough Tom Ford which is wildly over priced gets no reaction other than “those are nice”. If she pivots into liking TF this is me

Funny enough she has no problem asking me what I really want for my Bday/Christmas knowing it’s probably something expensive (for non SF bros)

Man I'm soooo glad my gf isn't into Shein. She's growing to be more and more sensitive to construction and fabric quality, which is precisely my plan

How do your frugal SOs feel about your spending habits?

My wife is extremely frugal, bordering on downright cheap. But she knows this and doesn’t hold my more freely spending ways against me. She just sort of rolls her eyes when it comes to my clothing but doesn’t really care as long as my closet and dresser aren’t overflowing and I’m not constantly cluttering up the foyer with delivery boxes.

This sounds a lot like my wife. When she was working, she bought nice enough stuff (she liked J. Crew and Ann Taylor a lot) but hasn’t worked since our oldest was born 12 years ago so hasn’t really needed “nicer” clothing in awhile. She rarely ever buys anything for herself anymore and when she does, she now seems to love Shein.

And she’s the same way about asking what I want for Christmas or my birthday. I can point her to a couple relatively pricey items for myself and she’ll happily get them for me but will get a little upset if I spend more than $40 on a piece of clothing for her.

My soon-to-be-ex-wife likes her Uniqlo, but also Sou-Sou, 45r, and suchlike. I used to spend a lot more on clothes and shoes which she did not like at all, but that's all stopped now, and it won't resume after the divorce. I have enough clothes and different priorities now and I have to be a lot more careful with money.
