Searching for pants causes me so much anxiety. Everything I find is too casual or too formal, too baggy or too slim, too wild or too boring. I just want good pants that I can wear with a lot of stuff. I guess I’ll stick to jeans like always ?‍♂️

I don't think I can offer much advice because it's so personal. After years of looking and testing things out, I think I have finally decided that what I really like is slightly drop-crotch, tapered pants in good fabrics - and I just look at measurements and can tell instantly now if things are going to work for me. And I know which brands and seasons work best, and mainly this is people like CdG, Yohji, Rosen, Sou Sou, and so on, but my absolute favourite (just for pants, I don't like much of their other stuff) is The Viridi Anne. I still wear other kinds of pants but I don't think I'm going to be buying anything else any more. The secret BTW, is that most of the pants I buy are supposed to be cropped, but because I'm so short, they end up being normal length on me!

When I'm in one of my "jeans are boring" moods I seem to end up buying pairs of cords. Still casual, but with some texture and look good in colors. I find them super comfy too. Meanwhile I usually end up having to take every pair of pants I buy to a tailor.
Cords are the fabric most prone to catastrophic failure - I like it as an accent in say, the collar of a jacket, but for a whole garment? Hard pass. Denim is way stronger. I guess that moleskin and canvas make good denim alternatives, as do some twills.

One Pants Wardrobe, can it be done?

I think swd has better odds on this one, if I had to I'd probably pick some moderately voluminous Yohji(-like) black gab thing (or maybe some canvas/cotton stuff, probably not moleskin though) for the sheer versatility and comfort even though I hardly have anything close in my day to day rotation these days.

In all my 50 years on this planet, I've never had or seen a "catastrophic failure" of cords. What exactly are you doing in your clothes?

As a fellow short person, seeing "cropped" or "9/10 length" in the description/details for pants always grabs my interest, as in most cases it would save me a trip to get them hemmed.

I know that feeling well. I bought some EZ pants from Uniqlo some years ago, marked as "ankle pants". They were the perfect length for me. I'm cursed with average height 5'10" but alarmingly short legs.

I really need to learn to hem pants myself.

The free/cheap hems at Uniqlo are why they're one of the first places I go to when I need a cheaper pair of pants, on top of their ankle pants.

I learned to hem my own pants. The machine paid for itself after about 6-7 pairs, assuming about $15 to $20 for hemming.

I know I have posted about these pants in the past, but for me nothing beats the Taylor Stitch Camp Pants. They are kind of a hybrid of chinos, jeans and painters pants. I can basically wear them anywhere. Events when I need to wear trousers/dress pants being the exception. I mostly have canvas versions but they make them in different fabrics.

I have the Old Towns "plains" as my (almost) one pant. High rise, slightly tapered, fairly wide but with a normal/flattering top block. The cut goes with everything. I have them in black canvas, cord, denim, and Irish linen. I even wore a pair (in linen) for my wedding a couple of years ago.
