Have you been to a gym lately? The whole scene is like fast fashion streetwear with the actual training taking a back seat

Yes.. I was sort of losing my mind at the beginning of the pandemic so got really into training as a way to cope. I'm going to a few of them every week, including the Gold's in Venice Beach -- where this stuff was photographed on site.

I get the streetwear trend and the oversized Yeezy vibe, but it just doesn't reflect what I see anyone ever wearing at a gym. Here's my take:

1) Without knowing the exact stats, I'd bet that women compose a small majority of gym members and a large majority of athletic wear in dollars. This whole collection is "unisex," but clearly based on a men's fit. I know that there is a community of girls who might rock this kind of stuff, but I have to believe that the majority want more of the Lululemon, Gymshark-style stuff. The fact that there isn't a pair of leggings in here is kind of nuts.

2) I know that brands like John Elliott do great with these kind of silhouettes, but I don't think those customers want a big "Golds Gym" logo emblazoned across it. I feel that it would look higher end with minimal logos.. or at least with more interesting and throwback graphics

3) At least here in LA, people seem to wear much tighter and conventional stuff while working out. Especially at Golds. There are some dudes there who look like they managed to repurpose a g-string into a tank top. I just don't see them picking this up.

That said, it looks like a lot of it is made in Europe and the price points are fair IMO.

I'd say that only about 10% of current CdG output hits the mark. This certainly does not.

It's not like he's being roasted or anything. The thread is filled with thirsty AF people. It's a shame it's a meme page and he's not credited though. He's an excellent model and an equally excellent writer.

I haven't been to a gym in over a year now (one of these days I'll get back in there) but I used to go3 or 4 days a week and never saw anybody wearing stuff like that collection in there. Judging by the teens I see hanging out in the park downtown reading their Archie comics and riding their scooters (or whatever it is the kids are doing these days), I think that Gold's Gym collection is aimed more at them than people who would actually wear it to work out. Like a baggier, and less spandex-y line of athleisure.

Yup, I’d totally agree with that… and the line makes sense if it came from an entirely different brand. I just wonder if those teens want to wear all of this Gold’s logo merchandise.

That Gold’s stuff seems to be a direct outgrowth of the 90s/2000s revival trends you see all over the place—baggy stuff, bootleg/band t-shirts, skate stuff, etc. Not surprising that they’re jumping in, especially as more and more heritage-y non-fashion brands try to get in on the nostalgia. Basically, it seems like the type of stuff you’d see at Urban Outfitters.
