I don’t have any idea what any of you are talking about so I’ll stick with Hall and Oates, Player, and Dr. Hook

Do real metal fans listen to like Boris or do they think it is too hipster-Pitchfork tainted? I'm listening Rainbow by Boris with Michio Kurihara and it is quite good.

I agree. But then I'm not a "real metal fan" at all, just this and things like Sunn O))) and Earth, basically the stuff that's on the drone / noise / experimental end of metal...

^ black metal has really taken of in experimentation in the last number of years. For example, there is a very lively Dutch scene, where everything has sort of a psychedelic vibe (not the most experimental example, but those guitars... Almost a Swans vibe). Nothing new with experimentation of course, Attila recorded with Sunn O))) long ago, but yea, BM is all over the map these days.

I don’t know, I used to be a huge metalhead but the elitism is just bad as hipsters. It’s no different. Granted I am younger so I didn’t live through the heyday and mostly dealt with older white dudes gatekeeping their music. No different from hipsters being pissed when anything gets popular etc.

Frankly I was more into 80s/90s death metal

You do realize that any culture has in/out group criteria and that subcultures will strongly enforce them when it comes to their core characteristics (often dress, lifestyle, arcane knowledge)? While I fully agree that the straight, white dudes ******** on anyone that fails to fully grasp the minutiae of their niche musical taste are idiots keeping different people out I fail to see how specific to metalheads this is. Don't forget that subcultures are rather weak in the grand scheme of things so this is the only way to ensure their continued independent existence, otherwise they just dissolve in dominant culture(s).

As for "hipsters" will they did dissolve so they don't exist anymore, who cares...

Some guy: "I don't know. I was in that community and wish people were nicer."

Some other guy: "Hey you stupid ******* idiot"

I've recently fallen off Metal as I actually could afford a nice headphone with DAC/AMP setup and it's a bit hard to listen to as some stuff is intentionally recorded poorly.. I listen to a lot of metal with my Koss Porta Pros still though, at the gym.

If the NYT has written an article about it and boomers use it as an epithet you can safely presume the topic being discussed has no present day relevance.
