Any recommendations for woodsy/mantastic overshirts or shackets? I tried a couple options from RRL but they didn't work for me. I have gone through DWW's write-up on the topic and none of the offerings of the brands mentioned quite appeal to me, namely because I find the patterns to be pretty fugly. I am drawn to the RRL horse-blanket motif, if that provides any guidance. I'd also **** with some tartans.

Iron Heart Ultra-Heavy Flannels basically wear like shirt jackets. Self Edge carries them and they're having a 15% off sale this weekend.

They're prob the thickest and heaviest flannels I've come across. Also heavier than most shirt jackets.

not water resistant. something that will keep me dry in an actual downpour. is a plastic-y rain slicker from a Carhartt-type brand my best bet?

Is Norwegian Rain out of your price range? If not, that's my number 1 recommendation.

definitely on the list, thanks! i guess i’m thinking super utilitarian / no frills and non fashion ... something to wear a couple times a year when I have to go outside in torrential rain for some reason. sounds like maybe I should just look into ponchos and things like that

having trouble finding recommendations that are truly waterproof and not just “water resistant” (which is fine in most cases, but just want something for that occasional heavy downpour)

FWIW, I just wear my current Norwegian Rain coats like normal coats even when it's not raining, since they don't look super tech-y.

Their style varies: they have super simple styles where the coat just looks like a regular single breasted mac, and they also have some more avant-garde styles in terms of details/pattern cutting.

I have a uniqlo blocktech fishtail parka - it was very cheap, looks pretty good and it's totally waterproof. I think LL Bean also has some waterproof parkas that are pretty well regarded. You can also get a regular old generic. yellow slicker from Amazon.
