I've never heard anybody born after about 1970 talk in earnest about "dressing to the left / right."

The rest of that just sounds either depressingly self-conscious or puritanical and archaic.

Maybe you just need to try a pair without lift à la WonderBra?

I agree though, stuff just hangs better with boxer briefs. But that also means you gotta have a good amount of room in thigh, front rise, and back rise.

I never found a boxer brief that doesn't ride up the leg

Was not going to post this after writing but it has been tugging at me for a while now...

I’m not interested in minimalism, this isn’t the point. Also, I know this topic gets hashed out all the time but this year is good as any to revisit. I wonder if there is anymore to add or have we beaten this to death?

Did anyone size down their closet these past six months?

I live by myself and my possessions take up four closets and six drawers. Included are two door hangers. How to justify this? I want downsize to two closets. I feel like it will be very freeing.

Adding to this that I have not been out of the house since March, there is very little utility I find in said possessions. I’m in shorts and tee during summer or curled up in a robe during fall and winter.

I’ve come to the point where I can smile and nod about cool clothes from afar, I don’t need it here with me. And I think another part of my thinking is what if I eventually share space with someone, I’m just disgusted thinking about it. When I was in college living with my girlfriend then, we shared a tiny apartment. Her clothes took up the entire closet space, wall to wall including the carpeted floor. I just remember how frustrated I was when it came time to move.

I’m considering unpacking everything, then, maybe select 5 outfits for summer, 5 for winter. That’s it. Everything else must go.

DWW posted a recent article and I was reading the beginning how clothes were meant to last so no need for excess. Also, I recall the Shah stating long, long ago about SF hive mind just being about spending in a nutshell, which sort of stuck with me for a long time. I mention these two points because I think this kind of discussion can bleed into other areas encompassing fashion (e.g. spending to support small businesses/artists, high consumption versus fast fashion.) Is there a real difference between someone that buys fast fashion versus a Styleforum member that consumes a lot? One similarity I observed is that things end up not being worn, then, how is that good? I am also thinking how such programs as "NMWA Trade-In" fits into this all. Where is the line drawn when buying less but better becomes out of control?

An alternative approach is to not baby my clothes. Wear what I have and wear it frequently, replace things as they naturally go. A prime example are some of the knits. Especially come fall and winter, I will need to get over the mental road block of a hardy turtleneck knit being too delicate worn around the home. But even with this approach, with 4-5 knits there will bound to be one or two worn more often than others. This puts me back at square one. May need to do a combination of 'A and B' i.e. downsize to the "best basics" I have and go from there. Example, three white pants, choose the one I love the most, and eliminate the other two. Rinse and repeat.

One other past argument included clothes having sentimental value and go through the motion of rediscovery when by chance something is dug up from the depths and depths of clothes a few years later. The way I approached this is repurposing clothing as wall art. Plus, I do not think I ever really missed anything that was let go.

I ditched a bunch of unworn and worn out stuff early this year that wasn't repairable. I do have too many button ups still but they are staking claim to closet space to protect it from invasion from a very nice lady who seems to expand her clothing archive slowly but surely despite my own finding of items that no longer sparked joy.
