Nah, thanks but I don't really like bits. The only ones I've liked are the Tom Ford 'York' loafer with the chain, and the Husbands teaser looked good.

there is not really much chinese food in my town and i don't mind trying my own hand at. would love to get a rec or 2 of a good cookbook primer for both 'american' tool/technique/palette and maybe also something that points me to more homegrown regional basics if there is such a cookbook. if anybody has some guide/basic recipes that they like to go to?

Fuschia Dunlop's cookbooks are highly regarded in the west. Her book Land of Plenty is considered by some to be among the best cookbooks, full stop, but is out of print. I have the updated Food of Sichuan and love it. If you aren’t really into spicy food, check out her other book on Chinese home cooking called Every Grain Rice. As a side note, I just bought an electric wok because my stove can’t get as hot as I would like for some of these recipes. I’ve made mapo tofu every week though, it’s so much easier than I would have thought and her recipe is very good.

Where are you picking up these records? In Japan for an extended period of time and not sure where to start.

I used some of the following for where to go, along with some reddit/forum posts to find some awesome shops. Never realised how I missed one aspect of the 90s, spending days in record shops, until I visited Japan. Esp. Osaka's Revenge Records where I found out the owner and I had a mutual acquaintance (Framtid had toured with Pisschrist), and a CD from some local friends very obscure band. Small world b/w sister cities.

One video taught me everything I was doing wrong with my mapo tofu.

That's a great video (and channel) - and I'm pleased that my (Japanese-Chinese) Mabo Doufu is much more like theirs than the horrible ersatz version from the CIA, although I tend to make it is less soupy largely so I can serve it in the same bowl as the rice (just for convenience) and I have to tone down the chili a bit so my son will eat it.

Interestingly I went to a place that specializes in this dish in Tokyo last time (the chef is from Szechuan) and they did several versions of varying intensity. They were all as soup-like as this recipe, and the one he claimed was the most old-fashioned and authentic actually had no chili at all (because of course chili comes from the Americas and was brough to Asia by the Portuguese) and was solely reliant on (tonnes of) Szechuan pepper and ginger for its heat. It reminded me of the so-called 'jungle curries' in Thai and Lao cooking which also use pepper not chili for the same reasons. But that much Szechuan pepper is not just hot, it's numbing.

So I order a Veilance Isogon jacket from Haven during sales. It arrives, I try on briefly before realizing it's too small. I list on ebay the same day. The jacket sells via auction, I ship in the original garment bag/box. The buyer receives it, then the next day tells me the jacket smells like detergent and requests a refund. I didn't wash the jacket, but I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt because I do remember a bleach-like smell coming from the garment bag. I do not remember the jacket itself as having any odor, nor did I notice anything else that would make me think it had been used/washed.

It's possible that the buyer freaked out at the bleach smell, which I should find strange also, even though the jacket itself is new. But if he is right and I'm dumb, is it plausible that a store like Haven would actually sell a used jacket? I'm planning on going to the Arcteryx store to ask.

Bags can smell funny. New clothes can smell like something or other. I have no Veilance or Haven-specific experience but I bet it’s nothing.
