In a similar boat. I have been solely doing freelance work for the past 2–3 years. Most of my clients are art museums and galleries, which are now closed indefinitely. I have a few projects that are still crawling along and may still finish up, but most have ground to a halt. One of my larger clients told me yesterday that they will be dialing everything back and moving everything in house. I expect others fill follow suit soon enough.

I'm married and my spouse is working (for now), so that helps. But it will be a strange, long 2020, especially in a small NYC apartment...

I’m mentally preparing myself for quite possibly being unemployed as of July 1. Hopefully, I won’t, though.

I certainly hope you won’t.

But things are looking bad. I’m from Spain. We’re around 47M people, top ten health care system in the world according to WHO. And the health care system is already collapsing in some areas, the damn bug just puts too many people in need of intensive care, there’s no health care system im the world that can handle it. Hence the full lock down, which is incredibly bad for the economy. Many companies here have applied for a thing called ERTE, which is basically a way to temporarily lay off people. But for many employees it won’t be temporary, and many companies will never open again. These people were 10 days ago going about their life and having fun and drinks in pubs despite the bad news coming from Italy.

Most optimistic forecasts here are an additional 1M unemployed people before the end of the year. We’re a country very reliant on tourism (the % of the total GDP of the country) and whereas in other places the economy might be very different (and so much stronger, like in the US), things will be bad everywhere.

I was reading a post in Hacker News this week (people working in IT will have probably heard of it), from people that are being let go. People having cushy jobs well into 6 figures. And we’re not talking about a few startups going under, that was normal, because 3 startups were created for every 2 closing down. Now it’ll happen to successful/promising startups, many of them reliant on selling services or products to other startups that will shut down. VC funding will be pretty much over. Even giants like Apple or Google letting people go is definitely not out of the question (Apple won’t sell as many $1k phones, Google, FB etc will get income from ads reduced...) so probably no one will be hiring. I’m using IT as an example because it’s what I know better and a sector which is prime example full of people where the idea of finding themselves unemployed for extended periods of time never really crossed their minds. Very very few sectors will be truly safe.

Sorry to sound so grim and I certainly hope that in the near future I look back at this post and think “thank god I was wrong and it wasn’t so bad”.

Yeah I have a friend who does Ux design for Dicks Sporting Goods and they cut salary 25% across the board. Retail workers afaik are still getting paid at the 25% reduction. The president and ceo and high level are apparently taking no salary for at least the next 2 months.
but this was their alternative to sweeping lay offs, which they’ve made clear could still happen

Really appreciate all the :('s. Definitely wasn't let go from a job I had any love for. Plus Ive got the right set up to go a good while without income.

Side note: if anyone knows of someone in NY hiring a pleasant English major with a decent knowledge of early 2000s menswear and 90's Australian comedy bands hook it up.

Same, yesterday I wore an Hermès wool shirt with jeans and an Inverallan "robe". Cosy but dressed up. Note that it's not like I was going to an office to touch base with Josh from sales and leverage a best practice so maybe the change is smaller for me.
I love your impression of an 80s businessman.

Really sucks to hear people on this board have already lost their job or suspect they're going to lose it soon. I don't know what to say besides that sounds extremely stressful. Worried about how this economic downturn will affect everyone.

I'm at a total loss on how people here can help, but if someone comes up with ideas, I'm definitely open. I feel like, even as a grown adult, I have no idea how to do things like look for jobs or find leads. If there's a way to pool together resources or knowledge or leads, happy to start a thread.

This, for example, is a good reminder of what you can do if you lose your health insurance.

guys, any particular eBay store you frequent for vintage tees..? likely from Japan or US. thanks

Not exactly what you’re asking, but a warning about eBay for the casual buyer:

I’d be very careful buying vintage tees on eBay right now. The fakes of an item crop up as soon as an original is posted. I’ve listed three vintage t-shirts in the last year — one a remarkably obscure anime/video game shirt few would even know about — and all three were faked, two while my listing was still live. People report them, but eBay won’t remove them unless contacted by the original copy rite owner (so basically never).

Most are easy to spot because of the price ($20-$40), multiple copies of the shirt for sale, or they’ll say ‘reprint’ or ‘Gildan’ reprint. A lot of these are technically passed off as real, but the seller assumes most buyers know it’s fake.

But many sellers try (and do) sell fakes for high dollar. It’s hard to recommend a good vintage store because a vendor with a lot of awesome vintage shirts is really suspect. These shirts are by nature rare; it doesn’t make sense that a thrifter/reseller would have a large cache of them lasting many months or years.

If you find something you like, check the completed listings, which will show you whether the same shirt model was listed in the past three-ish months. If so, take a hard look at the current auction to see if everything checks out. Ask the seller if it’s the same shirt (ie they’re flipping or just reselling it) or anything else to help determine legitimacy.

I dunno about Japan, but I’d be suspicious of any vintage shirt from China, Hong Kong, etc.

It kind of sucks, but the good ones I see are just random and not connected to any one reseller.

hm outside my world, but I’ll certainly keep an eye out!

like @dieworkwear, I wish I could do more,

I am cautiously optimistic for some of the therapeutics being tested right now (kaletra, pacquenil). If one of these works I think we can turn things around rapidly.

@Joytropics very kind of you! I was mostly joking, I'm pretty good at lining up the odd temp gig so I'll figure something out.

Not sure if this would be a stretch role or in your wheelhouse at all:

Up my alley for sure. Too awesome thank you! A lot of places are holding off bringing on new employees, but couldn't hurt to apply.

Too bad... my friend's company is hiring English majors who are well versed in 90s Australian comedy bands, but everyone at the company wears circa 1995–98 Helmut Lang. If you start talking twenty-first century menswear, they'll tell you to turn around and leave.

Still totally serious about English majors joining me to publish stepbrother erotica on Amazon, which is super-popular among sequestered women right now...
