also the money flexing got to be more west coast than east coast, even the undergrad I see here from mainland is a lot less "rich asian" stereotype (or maybe nice car is just more a visible thing in west coast...)

I mean all in all there is a crap ton of mainland undergrad, not all of them can be form real rich, though you do just need say 5% for a pretty strong impression to be formed...

Do you mean like quarter zip sweaters?

From what I've seen of your style online, I feel like no one really makes a good quarter zip in that category. The few times I've seen a good quarter zip, it's by a very contemporary brand like Philip Lim. The classic ones are a bit too dad-ish, IMO, and not in a good way.

I must say it's been super refreshing using a traditional forum again after a long while. I'd become so accustomed to reading through posts sorted by up/down-votes. Having to go through everything chronologically makes it a lot easier to have more structured conversation - I guess this is also why Discord communities have taken off so much in the past few years.

The grad students from both Taiwan and the PRC, especially at the top tier US schools, are often straight up impressive - their intelligence and discipline is often off the charts and elicits genuine admiration from everyone. That type of thing transcends ethnic and cultural divides.

In my last year or so at Caltech, I got a new apartment mate from Taiwan, same last name, no relation, and he finished his thesis in 4 years with 24 publications, most of them first author, and with a professorship and postdocs lined up to work with him back in Taiwan before he had even graduated. At Harvard, I met a PRC postdoc who was possibly one of the smartest men, in terms of pure analytical ability, that I've ever met. He could run intellectual laps around even the very good grad students and postdocs in that group.

I see a fair number of Chinese students who had serious communication problems, even today. A lot of them learn to communicate in English well, but it does take time.

I have noticed that a lot of undergrad Chinese international students do tend to stick together, but it makes sense to me. They’re in a foreign land experiencing a completely different culture, language, and values. I think they’d benefit the most joining Asian/Chinese college clubs, but there’s obviously going to be a big cultural disconnect between them and 2nd generation Asian Americans. I can’t see most of them getting along.

Also, there’s obviously going to be a big difference in dedication and commitment between undergrads vs graduate students, international student or not. You ******** around as an undergrad not knowing what you want to do and do fairly well. But I bet people going for graduate studies have more of a purpose. Otherwise, what’s the point?
