Biggest drawback is that the insulation value is lost fairly quickly through compression of the fibers. Best stuff in my opinion would be synthetics that don't try to be down and are sheet based. This allows for construction without baffles. By avoiding baffles there is no settling of the insulation at the bottom of the baffle, removes the thousands of needle holes, and the coldspots inherent is sew through construction of the typical puffer style jacket.

It's not white dresses and gentlemen in white tie and tails? Oh, I'm thinking of Debs.

My girlfriend made us both sleeping bags last year from Climashield Apex, and it's easily as good as my old down stuff. It's as warm as down, stays warm when it's wet, doesn't require batting, and it packs down nearly as tightly as down. I'm sure companies out there are using this stuff in clothes, and I wouldn't hesitate to choose it over natural down based on my sleeping bag experience. And also the plucking live geese thing.

Acronym and Arcteryx both use Climashield. Live plucking is pretty rare from what I've been told as it's immensely impractical.

Surprisingly, the pick your own down pop up shop wasn't quite as successful as the pitch deck had projected.
