1) I know John Mayer because of this forum, always forget why he is famous but I know he likes visvim and watches.
2) Haven't had a tv for a long time but then there is the internet and netflix and whatever so I know cardi B exists or whatever. I just cannot recognize her music (or face, I think).
3) It's not snobbish but let's face it the internet exposes us to pop culture in a more fragmented/personalized way so I guess you get the information you need for the type of interaction with the topic you have. I'm not going to listen to that stuff but I can say "Hey I saw this kanye west trump meme" or whatever.
4) Knowing the specifics of us pop culture is sincerely quite irrelevant in my life, I face no consequences beside missing a few jokes or whatever for not knowing it, that's not what people expect of me in interactions.
5) Pop culture will rot your brain if you mainly interact with it and avoid actual culture, checking out a few gossip websites or whatever and watching some **** tv series is fine.

When I hear John Mayer's name, I still think of the following:

******* is sort of like a white supremacist. I've got a Benetton heart and a fuckin' David Duke cock.

That, and how that one song is about how fathers should treat their daughters well because one day John Mayer may want to ******** with them. And the one where he likens a ************ to an amusement park for the pleasure of John Mayer.

To be fair, he does look cool in Visvim.

I was trying to figure out why I associated him with cringey assholery. I had somehow managed to block that comment out of my mind. God he sucks.

lol. Yeah, I remember that tempest in a teapot. He probably shouldn't have been talking about hood passes, especially since the reaction to his use of the n-word definitively showed that he didn't have one. As for that quote, I remember the internet exploding, as if a billion souls were suddenly crushed by the revelation that John Mayer likes white women.

Basically, John Mayer talks like a dude who has never really had trouble with women, and is a bit of a douchebag; that friend who you are cautious about hanging out with too often because he always lands you in trouble - a baby-faced version of a Bradley Cooper character - which he probably is.

Wow, didn’t realize John Mayer was quite as much of a ************* as I would have assumed him to be based on his persona.

He has matured quite a bit to be fair and has spoken candidly about his experience with fame/the industry. I think he’s an informal mentor to some newer artists?

Heard nothing but good things about his show with Chapelle and some of the older Deadheads approve of his touring with the band.

This is the kind of great cultural know-how that I have missed out on by not knowing who John Mayer is.

Yikes, that's a pretty dumb thing to say.

The full excerpt is somehow worse.

PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?

MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. ******* is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fuckin’ David Duke cock. I’m going to start dating separately from *******.
