I'm afraid that one of these summer evenings will find me grilling on my porch in my favorite Hawaiian shirt. I'll notice something out in the front lawn-- a frisbee? What is that? It's dark, so I grab a nearby citronella tiki torch for light, and head out to investigate. A neighbor sees me wandering around and asks if everything's ok. I give him the "OK" thing with my hand, and at that precise moment a passing dog walker takes my picture, instantly ruining my life.

I love Hawaiian shirts, and I hate these alt right dead-enders, so I'm going to keep trying to be a good person in the world while I wear my stupid shirts.

The not-terminally-brain-poisoned among us don't know about the ok sign thing (or they've forgotten about it), only vaguely know about the boogaloo, and still think 4chan is packed with pedophiles (they're right about that one, though). You can keep doing the ok sign and wearing a aloha shirts and people are likely not gonna think you're a q-anon white supremacist because they don't know and don't care, and if they do they'll probably assume you're someone who likes aloha shirts.

Hopefully, when this happens you will not be cleaning your AR and just happen to casually swing it over your shoulder in order to not leave a firearm unsecured when you go to investigate the frisbee.

If thousands of tiktokers and young people everywhere start using it, they'll drown that ascribed meaning in an ocean of meaningless ? in a matter of weeks - this is how we claim back everyday symbols like that. If we stay silent and accept it, they win. I want a million march for BLM with everyone in hawaiian shirts doing ? to claim that **** back from a small minority of assholes. or maybe that's giving them too much importance...?

I found this helpful guide:

You know, I'm actually a bit relieved seeing this headline simply because without fail, by the time the NYT covers a subculture or trend it is long since dead.

edit: or already completely absorbed into the mainstream. maybe I shouldn't be relieved after all

This came up about a month ago on Twitter. Feels extremely niche and on the scale of online happenings, kind of old news.

I know they say you've lost when you've lost your sense of humor, but I've lost my sense of humor on this stuff.

Does anybody have good refs for a collapsible heel loafer/slipper type thing? Indoor/outdoor use. Probably not an espadrille.
