I don't think there are any real secrets to starting a menswear blog. It's basically free nowadays with the various blogging platforms. To state the obvious:

1. I think earnest content is the best content. It's not hard to find your voice because your voice is natural to you.

2. You need to update regularly. It doesn't have to be every day, but I think a site should be updated at least once a week.

3. I think it's also good to set out some kind of editorial policy in the beginning, even if only for yourself. Your readers have to trust what you're saying, even if you're not the kind of site that reviews products of whatever. I think it's good to try to put some distance between you and the brands you write about.

My friend and boss at Put This On, Jesse, has been an advocate for indie content for years. He has a podcast network and started PTO. He's given multiple talks on how to "make your own thing" online. Here's just one talk, although you can look up others. Generally, I would say don't stress it too much (I still have no idea what's SEO). Just write earnest content and put it out there. Update regularly and just see what happens from there. But Jesse has much more specific advice.

Thank you very much! I'll give the video a watch later in the day. I'm probably going to want to be in a note-taking setting.

What do you want to know?
I was wondering about the general process getting started, how to keep content authentic, and of course trying to markett without social media, if that makes any sense.

I just read Calypso by David Sedaris and mind blown to find out he'd gotten into Kapital/jawnz. Not as amazing as seeing styleforum on the front page of The Intercept with a mushroom cloud photo, but still pretty good.
bought tickets to see him in 2015: we briefly spoke about kapital and his life in france. he also left an interesting note in my book...

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
