Cuba travel seems to be more and more of a ***** each time I look into it. $300 each way for flights and some countries don't even have direct flights in. ****.

won't those dri-fit and clima-cool shirts in the bargain bin do?

Yeah, I think you should be able to get T-shirts made from quick-drying synthetic material for around $20 a pop. Maybe the $50 ones dry quicker? I know some of my cheapies didn't dry completely overnight.

Those quick dry fabrics have a tendency to pick up stink, even if you wash them assiduously. Adding a little white vinegar to the wash makes a big difference.

Sounds like a fantastic trip, safe travels and keep us updated!

Yeah, my under armour shirts will smell like **** if I don't vinegar them. Even then, sometimes I have to wash them in hot water to kill it. The merino wool fabrics seem to resist that better, yet don't dry as quickly.

Curzon - yeah, I'm still shopping. Haven't gotten all the essentials yet. Will buy a shitload tonight that should tide me over.

I ended up picking up the Osprey Porter, the Kelty Redwing, the Rick Steeves convertable, and two Osprey Farpoint's - S/M and L/XL to try out. I've heard the S/M is the only size that will fit the carryon restrictions but I didn't want to get stuck with it being uncomfortable on my back. Bonus with the Farpoint is that it comes with a removable day pack, so one less thing I have to buy.

Picked up the Canon S100. Now I need a memory card.

You about 2 weeks from departure day?

4 bags? I assume you're trying them out and keeping just one.

This guy knows how to travel light. All the just-in-case kit can be bought later on the road.

Picked up a few essentials from Amazon. What's everyone's opinion on a silk sleep liner? I got a sea to summit one that includes a pillow cover and everything. Great reviews on it but its utility seems like a mixed bag.

I got myself the super duper SteriPen. As much water as I drink I think that'll be a good investment, especially when I get into some of the less sanitary countries.

why are you spending so much money on gear?

Not trying to spend a fortune on anything. Just **** that will last me a long time. All my pack choices were under $200. The steripen was a splurge over the regular models, but I think its worth it. I haven't run out to buy any $70 shirts yet. But I'm seriously considering it.

You may need a larger bag than the Osprey Porter if you're going to be away from home for more than a few weeks at a time. Unless you have the means to do laundry on a fairly regular basis.

I love my silk liner, mostly use it for camping. On a warm night it's plenty by itself, on cold nights it easily adds ten degrees to my down bag.

I've used it in low end hotels as well. It may only be psychological, but I feel like it's a little more protection from the biting critters.

Kind of where I was at as well.

Jackets coming tomorrow so I'll have something for cold or altitudes.

What do you guys recommend for sink laundry detergent? Dr. Bronners, some powdered ****, or something else that doesn't suds?
