    I started out on Burgundy,
But soon hit the harder stuff
Everyone said they'd stand behind me
    When the game got rough
But the joke was on me
There was no one even there to call my bluff
I'm going back to New York City
I do believe I've had enough.

    --Dylan

    Hmmmm.

I looked at the skies, running my hands over my eyes,
and I fell out of bed, hurting my head from things that I'd said.
Til I finally died, which started the whole world living,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

Another sunny day, I met you up in the garden
You were digging plants, I dug you, beg your pardon
I took a photograph of you in the herbaceous border
It broke the heart of men and flowers and girls and trees

Another rainy day, we're trapped inside with a train set
Chocolate on the boil, steamy windows when we met
You've got the attic window looking out on the cathedral
And on a Sunday evening bells ring out in the dusk

Another day in June, we'll pick eleven for football
We're playing for our lives the referee gives us fuck all
I saw you in the corner of my eye on the sidelines
Your dark mascara bids me to historical deeds

Everybody's gone you picked me up for a long drive
We take the tourist route the nights are light until midnight
We took the evening ferry over to the peninsula
We found the avenue of trees went up to the hill
That crazy avenue of trees, I'm living there still

There's something in my eye a little midge so beguiling
Sacrificed his life to bring us both eye to eye
I heard the Eskimos remove obstructions with tongues, dear
You missed my eye, I wonder why, I didn't complain
You missed my eye, I wonder why, please do it again

The lovin is a mess what happened to all of the feeling?
I thought it was for real; babies, rings and fools kneeling
And words of pledging trust and lifetimes stretching forever
So what went wrong? It was a lie, it crumbled apart
Ghost figures of past, present, future haunting the heart

    --Belle & Sebastian

Great song. I heard this on the radio a week ago or so, thought it was the Velvet Underground and Nico. Had to look it up.

I love this song, but there's one line that sticks in my craw.

    "Curses to this mirage!
    A bottle of ancient Shiraz
    A smattering of distant applause
Is ringing in my poor ears"

The song is about a French Foreign Legionnaire. It's a nice near-rhyme, but French guy would call it Syrah. Back me up, !luc.

I drunk myself blind to the sound of old T. Rex

    And speaking of Eno:

There's a storm outside, and the gap between crack and thunder
Crack and thunder, is closing in, is closing in
The rain floods gutters, and makes a great sound on the concrete
On a flat roof, there's a boy leaning against the wall of rain
Aerial held high, calling "come on thunder, come on thunder"

Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul
Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul

It's a monsoon, and the rain lifts lids off cars
Spinning buses like toys, stripping them to chrome
Across the bay, the waves are turning into something else
Picking up fishing boats and spewing them on the shore

The boy is hit, lit up against the sky, like a sign, like a neon sign
And he crumples, drops into the gutter, legs twitching
The flood swells his clothes and delivers him on, delivers him on

Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul
Sometimes, when I look deep in your eyes, I swear I can see your soul

There's four new colors in the rainbow
    An old man's taking polaroids
But all he captures is endless rain, endless rain
He says listen, takes my head and puts my ear to his
And I swear I can hear the sea

Somtimes, when I look in your eyes I can see your soul
    (I can reach your soul)
    (I can touch your soul)
    Sometimes

I would agree, but I think that it's as much the way Meloy sings this bit as the lyrics themselves that really make it stand out.

That's James. Did Eno write that or was it a cover of Eno?

Eno was the producer on that James album, and there is no doubt that the wonderfully atmospheric synths on that track were a result of his involvement. Laid is of course best known for . . .

*cough* excuse me, I didn't mean to let that last bit out.

    It's called love
    And it's so un-cool
    It's called love
    And somehow it's become unmentionable
    It's called love
And it belongs to every one of us
    It's called love
And it cuts your life like a broken knife

We are made of it and if we give submission
Among our chances there's a chance we can choose
And if we take it, by uncertainty's permission
    Then it's impossible to lose

Only time can write a song that's really really real
The most a man can do is say the way its playing feels
And know he only knows as much as time to him reveals

    - Richard Hell, "Time"

    going past golden gate
    elementary everyday
    kids down colorful hill
    recess and fire drill
she likes the side without the heat
    where the sun don't beat
    she likes the cooler side
    of washington street

    hummingbirds, pigeons and doves
    hover rooftops above
light shine down into the tides
    over hillsides
see where the bridge and mountian meet
at the mouth of the sea
and where the sailboats live a day
    and turn away
    with the purple evening

    losing our loving hold
    in the skies flourescent glow
she takes her thoughts and cares
    into the moonlit alley stairs
still in my hand i feel the sting
    the sound of bells ring
and the memory of the face
    never washes away
    the current evening

Finally, a song that really means something:

Come on and dress me, dress me, dress me in my finest array
"˜Cause just in case you haven't heard, today is doe-me-doe day!
Dress me in my silver garters, dress me in my diamond studs
    "˜Cause I'm going doe-me-doing in my doe-me-doe duds!

I want my undulating undies with the maribou frills
I want by beautiful bolero with the porcupine quills
I want my purple nylon girdle with the orange-blossom buds
    "˜Cause I'm going doe-me-doing in my doe-me-doe duds!

Come on and dress me, dress me, dress me in my peek-a-boo blouse
With the lovely inner lining made of Chesapeake mouse
I want my polka-dotted dickie with the crinoline fringe
    For I'm going doe-me-doing on a doe-me-doe binge!

I want my lavender spats, and in addition to them
I want my honey-colored corset with the herringbone hem
I want my softest little jacket made of watermelon suede
I want my long persimmon placket with the platinum braid
I want my leg-of-mutton sleeves, and in addition to those
I want my cutie chamois booties with the leopard-skin bows
I want my pink brocaded bodice with the floofy, fuzzy ruffs
And my gorgeous bright-blue bloomers with the monkey-feather cuffs
I want my organdy snood, and in addition to that
I want my chiffon Mother Hubbard lined with Hudson Bay rat
Dress me up from top to bottom, dress me up from tip to toe
Dress me up in silk and spinach, for today is my doe-me-doe day!

So come and dress me in the blossoms of a million pink trees
Come on and dress me up in liverwurst and camembert cheese
Dress me up in pretzels, dress me up in bock-beer suds
    "˜Cause I'm going doe-me-doing in my doe-me-doe duds!

Sung by Hans Conreid in THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T. Lyric by Dr. Seuss. Production by Stanley Kramer.

Come out Virginia, don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one ...

Billy Joel - Only the good die young

I'd rather laugh with the sinners
    Than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun
    Only the good die young!

Street hustler comes up to me one day when walking down the street minding my own business.
    Now he looks me up
    and he looks me down
    and he says:
    "Hey Man, what be this!?
    And what be that!?
And why you gotta look like that?"
I looked at him and kinda laughed
    and I said:
    "Hey Man,
    I am cool
    I am the breeze!"
