FYI, C&J appears to have switched to DHL. Additionally, looks like going forward C&J will no longer cover import duty for orders placed with mail order. The price quote I received this morning included the following notice:

"Customers in the EU will be liable to pay VAT at their respective country’s VAT rate and a small import fee. Customers outside of the EU will be liable for any duty and taxes according to their country’s import regime. Customers outside of the EU will be liable for any duty and taxes according to their country’s import regime. "

I was dinged for close to US$70 on the shell Galway II gmto.

For Europe, well Belgium at least, normally nothing small about the customs fee when dealing with DHL.

Same here in NL: 21% VAT + 6% import tax + around 15 eur DHL handling fee

It's a few years since I ordered from outside the EU but I recall a substantially higher handling fee back then.

Import duties in the Netherlands/EU should not be applicable for goods of UK origin, according to the trade deal.
EU VAT (15-25%) will be applied on import, but then UK VAT (20%) will de deducted; VAT should even out more or less.
EU countries can set their own VAT rate within the range of 15% and 25%, from memory.

Correct, but at the moment you need to pay it first and then you can claim it back by proving the UK origin.
I was not aware this was the case; this is the first I have heard of it. Did you experience this with a recent C&J shipment?

From what I know C&J issue declaration statements to customs with shipments going outside of the UK, to verify the UK origin of the goods. I do not see why (or how) a recipient would prove UK origin of the goods.

You need to add approximately 50 E. This is the amount that is charged by the courier services for the custom clearance

You are correct. It's up to the sender to provide proof of origin (How could the recipient do it?). Proof / certificate of origin is needed as well as the customs declaration. So long as 50% of the product by value is made in the UK or EU (or in a third country with whom both have an FTA such as Japan) you shouldn't pay any custom fees.

I bought a pair of shoes from the C&J store in Jermyn street in January and the proof of origin documentation wasn't properly done so I got charged a customs fee (I'm in Sweden). In the end, C&J refunded it, but by now it shouldn't be happening. It was the first purchase post Brexit I did, just a few weeks afterwards when things weren't entirely clear even for carriers. Since then I've bought things from Drake's and PVC among others without any issues. Some charge local VAT and customs during purchase which is nice as it means the product gets straight to your home as before.

Question about this actually : Post Brexit, how is in store shopping by tourists affected? Is VAT not removed from the bill any more? If not, surely that kills quite a bit of the business? I guess products are desired will be bought regardless but must be a bit of a blow overall to the brick and mortar industry.

As the UK has been in lockdown since Brexit I can't really comment on how this has played out yet. There won't be any VAT refunds at the airport

I'm sure that the politicians in all their wisdom have a much broader scope of the situation than me, and are doing what is best for the country. They would never do something as silly as chasing foreign shoppers to Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt and killing London retail.

New policy. Tourists don’t get vat deductions anymore. It’s gonna hurt their tourism sector.
