After three years the laces of my Islay's broke down, because of unavailability at my present location, I replaced them with a pair of Timberlake laces

FYI, C&J appears to have switched to DHL. Additionally, looks like going forward C&J will no longer cover import duty for orders placed with mail order. The price quote I received this morning included the following notice:

"Customers in the EU will be liable to pay VAT at their respective country’s VAT rate and a small import fee. Customers outside of the EU will be liable for any duty and taxes according to their country’s import regime. Customers outside of the EU will be liable for any duty and taxes according to their country’s import regime. "

I didn't know they were covering it before.
I was avoiding going over 800 USD to avoid duty.
DHL will definitely declare.

Yes they will, and curious what the charge will be. My understanding is it depends on how the shipper fills out DHL form. DHL once charged me 10% duty on a Carmina order that was DDP (Carmina reimbursed me immediately). Yet on anther shoe order that was more than 2x value, I was charged only 6% of declared value + $15 admin fee.

On a separate note, there are many stockists who offer free shipping. So if you're ordering a shoe or boot that's available from a stockist that offers free shipping, you can save on shipping by placing your order with the stockist. Many of them offer excellent customer service, as does C&J in my experience.

It's been a few years since I last checked the HTC but there's a kind of generic "other" code for men's leather shoes that's 8.5%. There's a different code for "welt footwear" that's 5% but good luck with having that one be applied.

Thanks for the tip. I may contact Pernilla and ask what code C&J uses. The boots I ordered are well under $800, but the combination of lulu tips and a couple of pairs of laces push total to $780 (using current exchange rate of 1GBP = 1.38 USD). If the USD weakens further by the time my boots are ready to ship, the total could exceed $800. I'd hate to pay duty because of the tips and laces!

I probably paid 8.5% on my Carmina pair. DHL didn't itemize fees but, assuming they charged me $15 admin fee, duty works out to ~8.5%
