I'm trying to identify a pair of C&J shoes but cannot make out the model name from the print inside (starts with HARxxx?). They look to be a handgrade model on a city sole, which is not available on the C&J website.

Does anyone have a clue?

So the two largest populations are not caring about clean energy and the EU cannot do it financially responsibly? How is this something that should be promoted?
Not fully,

India and China also install more renewable energy than coal-fired powerplants. However, their energy demand is growing so fast that the net additons of renewable energy are not sufficient at the moment. China Accounts for around 16% of global GHG emissions, and India for a few more percentage points. The USA with a quarter of the Population accounts for 18% of global GHG emissions. Germany as fourth largest economy, and a quarter of the US population, Accounts for just 1.3 to 1.7% of global GHG emissions. We are already very energy efficient relativ to GDP.

It is about sustainability ;-)
I never had more sustainable clothing than shoes by Crockett&Jones. My first pair is 24 years old and still nearly perfect. Comparable to old Mercedes cars, my oldest is 32 years old, not nearly as perfect as my shoes, but it serves me almost as well ;-)

Lanark's. Great investment.

Brexit hasn't been nice for anyone, but the value with brands like C&J, Loake and Tricker's is still there. A brand like Church's has priced themselves out of the market, but Brexit had nothing to do with that.

I also own (and like) EU-made Carlos Santos, but they are clearly build on a lower pricepoint. As longs as I can still buy Tricker's/C&J from the factory stores or worn ~5 times second hand, I won't be buying more Carlos Santos/Meermin/Carmina.

Agree with you.

Concerning second-hand shoes I bought a fairly new, with little wear, wholecut "Boxham" on the 360 last in burniahed grey calf. It is difficult to get grey shoes

The left shoes is confortable already. The right-hand shoe however has a foĺd/creasing above the midfoot from previous wear. It pushes onto my right foot when walking, because I have never folding, or bending, of shoes there.

How do you prepare second-hand shoes for wearing, given the folds/bending and creases from previous wear?

Last year I've purchased about 20 pairs and sold on half of them. Of the pairs I kept, only two had been worn previously (the Pembroke's and these Lanark's) and both were as good as new. All the others were unworn, albeit via sales/Vinted or other platforms. I never really got on with shoes that were worn in.

Thanks Ypuh,

It appears that worn shoes are difficult to break in again. I also purchased them at Vinted.

Personally, I don't buy pre-owned shoes. You could try soaking the leather thoroughly and then putting the shoes on trees (better if slightly oversized, in order to stretch the leather). Once dried, you can apply a moisturiser. Hoping it will help.

I’ve read that having a new long sole and heel put on them helps a lot and you could ask the cobbler or factory to moisten the leather when the shoes are back on the last so that the old crease patterns are minimised. But, of course, that is a costly route.

Together with the idea of stretching the leather on the last, the soaking with water and under a wet towel ironing out with a steam iron the creases should help as well. I tried it with my old black dress derbies, and it worked well. As I wore them again, the pattern of my own folds/bends and creases of course reemerged.

If that not help, I would go the more expensive route and take them with me to London to get them resold and relasted by Crockett & Jones, which costs 195€, with total costs then of 200€ + 195€ = 395€. Still cheaper than a new shoe.

Here are photos of this old model "Bloxham", a wholecut on the 360 last of the benchgrade line in burgundy and dark brown. Mine is burnished grey:

Does the 365 last (Crockett & jones islay boot) fit large? I’m wondering if I should size down 0.5 from my regular uk size. For reference, Swansea pembroke and cavendish I take 9 UK. Bostons are the only ones I’ve felt the need to go up 0.5 due to the shorter toe area

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
