Pretty attracted by this Crawford from the Hand Grade collection, but always wary in case of loafers. The last is described as being narrower waisted and with a slimmer heel, which sounds good. Anybody with some experience?

I once wanted to own this very loafer. I have two Cadogans ( unlined version on the same last) and found them excellent, even though I have wide feet. They hold the foot well. Unfortunately for me, C&J stopped making the tan Crawford in 11.5 and I don't wear loafers enough to warrant paying the Special Order charge. Nowadays, I have arthritis in one of my big toes and find that only double soled shoes, preferably with a rubber outer sole, are comfortable for me. So the Crawford ship has sailed in my case.

Thank you very much for the feedback!

Sorry for your arthritis.

This is the reason for which I don’t like and don't own any shoes and boots in shell cordovan. I can't see why it's so popular.

As a the owner of a few Shell shoes: Well, I totally get this. I love the material, the noble shine that doesn't look pretentious like a mirror gloss wax does and most of all the special magic hue it grants to colours. The special blend of dark brown hues of my Ascott is just gorgeous, the regular calf is almost boring in comparison. I also adore the Whisky.

The problem with Shell for me is, that I have to get the fit really right, otherwise the rolling gets too excessive for me. My 325 Shells are fine, if they wore bigger I wouldn't be a fan.
My perfect fit is my Aldens on the Barrie. On these the Shell almost folds instead of building waves. Here is an example: #3,157
That is a bit more pronounced with the 325 and while I see a 3rd Alden blucher next year, there will be not another 325 Shell.

Thank you for the reply. I see your point, but I stand on mine, shell just doesn't for me. I will always prefer calf and other leathers.

Fortunately tastes are various.

I didn’t mean to give you the impression I’m offended. It’s just peculiar to me you went all the way to the store, and left without asking for the information you were after.

Probably could have placed the MTO in person too if they figured out the sizing that day.

Also able to look at leather swatches

Its funny how peoples tastes differ. Examples:

*Some love shell and some hate it.
*Some love speedhooks and some hate them.
*Some like scotch grain and some dont like it.
*Some prefer double leather soles and some think they're useless.
*Some want blind eyelets only. And some want exposed eyelets only.
*Some love Loafers. Some keep well away from them.
*Some love commando soles and some wont go near them.
*Some want the stormwelt/splitwelt and some dont want it.
* Some like 360 degree welt stitching all around and some only like 270 degree welt stitching.
*Some like flat laces and some dislike them
*Those who are into shoes love these kind of messages. Some who arent into shoes think these messages are sad and feel sorry for us

And some even report nausea from certain pictures of boots. 🤡

I'm surprised at the lack of love for the more formal C&J offerings. 90% of the posts seem to be about rugged boots.

Not a complaint - just surprised.

Not a fan either. It's not horrible or anything, but I just prefer calf if they would be priced equal. The fact that cordovan costs almost double makes that I own none (tried a couple times).

It has nice properties, but also a few bad ones. For starters I don't really like how it scratches and rolls over times. Don't always like how calf creases either, but you have good and bad creases. I do like the sturdiness of the material and deep colours.

I almost completely agree, only exception being loafers: I absolutely love them.

I also dislike flat laces. Don't see why they are considered more elegant.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
