To non-shoe folk who often only own one or two pairs, having multiple that are on the face of it similar, is madness. I’m criticised for this regularly.

I’ve got some Westgate 2 arriving today, but starting to think I should have gone for yours… Semi-brogue looks cleaner.

How does hurricane hide take cream/polish? I quite enjoy polishing shoes/boots. With a glass of red wine, I find it therapeutic and relaxing. Does cream sit on top of hurricane hide or does it absorb it?

Also, can you use renovator on hurricane hide?

P.S those boots look outstanding!

I use saphir creme. But I think it needs very little application as its an oily leather . Apply too much and it ends up sitting there as a layer.

I've not tried renovator on it. Dont see what harm it could do

These Westfield Oxfords look beautifully elongated! I was complaining to someone that the 341 last was too round and short. I guess I was not making sense.

I was hoping that even the brogue Oxfords could have the fashion forward shape of Last 348.

However, the Westfield Oxfords in 341 look so shapely and classy! They surely are much more pleasant to my eyes than the short and round old school country derbies.

The only thing is that C&J offers Westgate 2 with city rubber soles, but Westfield with leather soles only. Westfield with city rubber soles currently has to be special ordered.

To be honest, I do not like the shape of last 348. For me, it is too elongated.
341 is my preference in terms of modern elongated lasts. But then, I also like the classic 236 and have a lot of Connaughts on 236.

Hello Folks,

I am trying to decide which Donegal 2 to get but I don't have any knowledge of Hurricane Hide or Hatch grain. Is hatch grain quite stiff to start with (like the Islay)? Is hurrice hide soft like the waxed calf on a Chelsea V? How do these leathers look with age and patina? Or, are the two exactly the same except for the pattern (and colour)?
As for polishing, I read somewhere that Saphir oil creme is recommended. How do you guys care for an "oily pull up" leather?
One final question - is this leather from Horween and, if so, is it a Steer hide rather than calf?
Final, final question - what is your experience of steer hide and how does it compare to the usual calf leather from Crockett and Jones?

Some photo's would help as I don't know the whole C&J catalog, but indeed, for oily pull leather the oiled leather creme from Saphir is great. It's a bit of a mix between Renovateur and the Pommadier creme, where the mink oil in Renovateur tends to darken the leather and Pommadier sits on top of an oily leather.

Oiled leather (or pull up leather) can be pretty much any type of leather. You can easily make scratches with your nail, and then just as easily brush them out again. A 'pull up leather' has little to do with the type of leather you get, it can still be full grain calf leather and in this case even grained, only then infused with oils and waxes.

Overall it's low maintenance (1-2/yr), robust, but very casual. It looks and feels very different to regular calf leather and requires almost no care. It also patina's nicely with the oils visibly moving around and creating color variations.
