Thanks! Well I first applied 3 layers of shoe cream using small circular motions with a damp cotton cloth, switching shoe between every layer. Use more water if needed. This takes around 30 min per shoe. After this is done the shoes should look nice and shiny. Then switch to a shoe polish and apply using the same technique 1-2 more layers. Use more water on these last layers and focus on parts that are visible when wearing the shoes. After using the polish you should (more or less) have a mirror shine. The trick is to be patient and really work the cream/polish into the shoes properly - if you think you're done, do a little bit more.

I tried to polish my Hallams yesterday evening. Looked nothing like that, though I only spend about 3 minutes per shoe with one layer of cream on each... Perhaps I'll set aside 90 mins this weekend as they really look great.

From my experience, I get a better shine when I let the polish set on the leather. Can't say I put in as much time as TheSuit, but I don't go for a full shoe gloss; I prefer only the toe box (and sometimes the heel) to have a high shine.
