I have always buttoned them.

I always unbutton. I don't know why. I vaguely recall reading one of those "how to wash a dress shirt" articles and it said to unbutton every button.

I always unbutton everything. I don't have any empirical evidence, but I assume the holes will stretch more and you will have a high probability of button loss if you keep them buttoned. The only ill effect of keeping them unbuttoned would be placket stretching, which I imagine is negligible.

I unbutton dress shirts.

I button polos and turn them inside out. I once saw a rep for one of the companies who supply golf shirts say to do this. I don't know for sure if this is right, but I haven't had any problems over the years.
