I searched this issue and found that many people here do not like black suits. Are pure solid patternless black dress slacks OK to wear with a shirt and tie? If so, any color suggestions for the shirt and tie?

I am assuming the only acceptable shoes to wear would be black, right?

I'm not a fan of black dress pants, but that's more my personal hang up.

I really don't like wearing a shirt and tie with no jacket.

You could wear literally any colour shirt and tie. Black is called black for a reason.

    And yes, black shoes.

Fair point. OP should also avoid black jackboots with said attire.

Black trousers are fine but will inevitably excite contrary views here. I am sure that some who would prefer the colour did not exist such is their opposition to anything made from it for day use.

Black dress pants are the standard pairing with smoking jackets, if that's your thing. They may have to braided for that to work, though (i.e. be dinner-suit pants). I disremember. And yes, in this case, black shoes are an absolute must.

If the OP is referencing wearing a shirt and tie without a jacket then I doubt he's into smoking jackets. Call it a hunch. But interesting info Ivar.

I'm in the camp of no black, but I was ok with it in HS and college. The other day I saw a guy wearing black dress pants with a dress shirt (no tie or jacket). I remember wondering what store in the mall he works in.

I have no idea what a "smoking jacket" is. The black dress pants would simply be worn to work, just like all the others I have. I guess there is nothing WRONG with wearing the black pants, but the impression I got is that most think something else would look better.

He didn't work in the mall, he was a waiter at a restaurant.

It depends. Some consider it absolutely wrong. I suspect that most people on this forum who do wear black odd trousers do so only because they have already spent the money on them. If you haven't already bought them, then you are better off with charcoal or, even better, mid gray.

For more than one reason. The last dudes to rock that combo had, erm, slightly more than a bad reputation... :uhoh:

I've always wondered this question as well. Especially when the dress code at your firm is business casual, the normal attire would be odd trousers and a dress shirt with no tie.

So far I've only spent money on one pair of black odd trousers that wasn't too expensive and I'm glad I found this thread before I made any more further purchases. It seems like HY is a popular choice for trouser purchases.
