I got some sort of virus on my windows-based laptop a while ago. It used to cause IE to continually open new windows to the point I couldn't close them fast enough. I uninstalled IE, and now use Firefox. For web browing purposes, it seems fine, although I know the operating system is jacked.
Question: If I were to buy a portable hard drive to transfer just my old school files (mostly word docs), music files, and pic files for eventual transfer to a new computer, could those sort of files be infected so as to contaminate a new computer? I'm also just thinking of transferring these files to a portable hard drive and re-formatting my laptop to eliminate performance issues and transferring back. Not sure if viruses typically just infect executables rather than .doc, .mpg, .jpgs.
