I'm planning on taking my dad's old Hi-Fi to college with me next year, since I'm the only one who uses it.

I'm taking a Yamaha RX v870 with a Sony PS-LX150H turntable.

Here's the question, I can either take a pair of Boston Hd-50s (bookshelf type speakers) or a pair of Dahlquist DQ-18s (towers with woofer, mid, and tweeter).

I realise this equipment is old old old, but some of the members here are too.

Would the DQ set be too much for my dorm, ie would the Bostons sound better in that smallish space?

Also, the grill was removed from the DQs several years ago (cat piss). There is a metal grille over the speakers, do I need to get another cloth grill or is it okay in that naked condition?

Don't worry, the Fran will be along with his styrofoam cups sooner or later...

Dorm rooms are pretty small, and a speaker's performance is primarily affected by its position in a room, so take the smaller speakers because they'll be less intrusive, and you will have more placement options.

Don't worry about the grill cloth. In those days, it's mostly for cosmetics.

Yeah, towers in a small dorm room would be comical at best. I was happy with a pair of Boston A-60's when I went.

Theft won't be an issue where I'm going.

I was mainly just thinking the DQs were of higher quality, I thought I read somewhere that they were 1G each new. Also, the bass sounds strange on the Bostons and I figured it might be because of the lack of sub in them.
