Question about the fit of my suit

I am 5'10". I fit a 44 regular to get shoulders correct.

I recently purchased my first decent suit from Suit Supply. I have been told by one person that my suit is too long, but I'm not so sure. Yes, the sleeves are too long, but the jacket ends just far enough to cover (but not go past) my butt, and ends before the separation at the crotch of the pants. I'm worried, also, that moving to a short might just be too short.

Note that one of the pictures is not ideal: My arm is bent on one of the shots from the side, with the jacket open, thus making the jacket look shorter. But I included the shot because I figured it provides some perspective.

Two questions:
1 - How is the fit? I'm not a perfectionist, but it's a $500 suit (Canadian dollars). I intend to slim the arms slightly, shorten them just enough to not look sloppy, and of course hem the pants which can't be fully seen in the pictures.
2 - The sleeve button holes are functional. I need to take about 1.75 inches off. That will bring the buttons close to the edge. I don't want to risk shortening from the shoulder as that is very risky. I am wondering if I should ask my tailor to remove the end button & sew that hole up? I'm not sure. I don't need the sleeves to be "perfect" (I don't care enough to show cuff since I spend a lot of time sitting at work, and when I sit, properly tailored sleeves look too short in sitting position).

My expectations:
I want a classic fitting suit, with modern slim elements.
An oddly decent comparison is Obama vs. Stephen Colbert. I know Obama is taller, but the button stance regardless of height is proportionately lower, with a slightly longer jacket proportionate to the body. Stephen Colbert's suit is still classic in style, but it is slightly more modern in length, which, while it isn't bad, might be worse for someone with large shoulders & chest (most short size jackets poof at the lapels for me).

Thoughts? Input? (I'm getting the suit replaced right now for an identical one due to faulty shoulder stitch construction). Thanks.

I'm not sure who is telling you the jacket is "too long" as it looks good enough from the photos available. We would need some better photos of you standing relaxed with jacket buttoned for better critiques as most of the pictures suffer from you contorting your body to photograph yourself.

There are some people on the forum who have slimmed their jacket sleeves, but I would say that's a slightly risky alteration unless you have a very trustworthy tailor, not to mention most people won't notice a slightly roomier sleeve besides the wearer themselves or a #menswear fanatic who is critiquing your fit. Sleeve length seems fine once you have it tailored--again don't worry too much about button distance unless you really have to remove all length below the button.

Overall the suit looks solid; I'm sure anyone here could tear it apart but based on your criteria it fits the bill. Don't obsess too much over all the small details otherwise you'll never find "the" suit that fits--reading this forum has a habit of doing that to ya haha

A full picture head to toe taken with no angle would help get a better answer.

In short, if you have a longer torso and short legs, a traditional length jacket can look off and the same can be true the other way around.

A side not, do not shorten the sleeves if you have working button holes. It will make the jacket look silly if the buttons are too close to the edge. Either have the tailor shorten them from the shoulder or maybe try that crazy button idea you have.

Have you tried the same suit but in short? Given the price you quoted, I am guessing that the model of the suit is Lazio. As you can see, for the jacket, 3 out of the 5 measurements are identical for size 54 (that's European sizing, should be the same as US 44) and size 27 (that's the short cut, which is the European size divided by 2), namely, chest, waist and shoulder. The sleeve length is one inch shorter, while the length is 1.2 inch shorter. Could be much better than the regular cut.

You need someone else to take pictures for you. Button your jacket, stand up (but don't stick out your chest or pose), and get pictures from all sides.
