Has anyone worked in an upper tier department store as a SA?
How do you get a job at a place like Barneys as opposed to JC Penney's?
What is the career path like? e.g. Stocker -> SA -> Buyer?
What sort of commission is standard?

I'm not looking to get into this business, just curious

1.Yes

2. Personal relationships with manager/employees and a balling interview. Yes a resume is important but these jobs are based on rare people skills. It doesnt matter if you learned to read Aggamenon in the original Greek at Brown if you can't hold a conversation worth a damn.

3. You can start as an SA, but it probably won't lead to a buying postion. YOur best upweard mobility move would be to store manage - which in a high end department store is'nt chump change.

4. Seems like %3-7 for an SA. Remember at a high end department store good SA's can personally sell 750,000 + a year so it starts to add up.

+1

The store managers/buyers operate in a much different function than SAs. While salespeople are locally-driven (directly earning a living from those who walk in as customers), the managers and buyers are constantly flitting to NY for presentations and meetings regarding whatever product is coming in and how to go about selling it. It is the latter category that one must be in to "move up" in the company.

ex: floor manager--->store manager--->regional buyer/ regional manager

I don't know about the others, but I for sure know that Bloomingdale's requires all of its managers to have college degrees, something that is generally not needed for an SA position.
