Question about jacket bicep measurement.

Good day gents. I hope the holidays have been great so far and continue to be so into the new year.

I’m currently in the process of designing myself a new MTM suit and in that regard I’m wondering about this:

What is normal to add upon a bicep measurement (measured over shirt sleeve) to get the actual suit jacket bicep measurement?

Say for instance a bicep measures 38cm around with shirt on, do you then add for example 5cm to that number and end up with 43cm circumference as the actual jacket bicep or is there no hard and fast rule to this?

Thanks in advance and wish you all a great day.

K.

What does the MTM maker recommend? I take it that you are not being fitted in person? I think this is kind of a red flag. This is not something you as the customer should have to specify or think about.

if this measurement is really going to be up to you, suggest that you measure a jacket that fits you reasonably well in the sleeve and go from there.

The sleeve dimensions are drafted from the depth, height and width measures of the armhole. The sleeve size is not arbitrary.
You cannot isolate the sleeve size/shape from the armhole dimensions without causing issues.

I think that what you are asking is that in the same way mtm tailors and some otr size guides reccomend 4-6" larger than actual chest and belly measurements to render a good fit in those areas is there a similar 'rule' for biceps.

I don't know, but I do know that if I were to get a remotely ordered mtm shirt (or casual jacket) done now, my upper arm measurement would be 20" around (10" measured straight across the upper arm from the pit and perpendicular to the armhole).. But as Despos said, this upper arm measurement isn't to be confused with the armscye measurement which in the my case would be 12" across (point to point, not with the curve). Now, I don't know what my upper arms measure, but they're not near 20". But that's my 'good enough' rule (and my buying a shirt on ebay rule). The variables at play between armscye, shoulder length and upper arm measurement are too complicated for me to figure out all the ways this area can fit differently, hence, the 'good enough' rule.for something on the cheaper side, othewise I would just wait to get fitted so I don't muck things up on my own (easy to do).

As Breakaway questioned, what does your mtm person recommend over and above your actual upper arm measurement? I would imagine that your person would calculate things based upon multiple body measurements, hence Despos' you cannot isolate.
