Is it possible to stitch a buttonhole through only one layer of fabric? Usually a buttonhole goes through two layers of fabric.

It's possible, but the buttonhole won't be very strong. Depending on the garment, a buttonhole usually goes through at least two layers and some sort of interlining as well.

What are we talking about?

You know what, I figured out a way that I could get the buttonhole to go through two layers of fabric. I'm talking about adding a buttonhole to a back pocket of pants, BTW.

Aha. If you've figured it out, good. Often some fusing (I know, I know) will be put around the site of the hole, or there are other methods of reinforcing it.

Sometimes they put the fusing there just to stabilize the fabric. Then after the buttonhole has been applied they peel away the rest of the fusing.
