Does a Bib Front tuxedo shirt require a cumberbund? Can it be worn with suspenders instead?

The key is I don't want to wear a cumberbund - the bib is above the waist however - i am young and stylish - how wrong is it for the bib line to be showing over the trouser waist

It will look odd because you will only have studs down the first 4 button-holes on the bib, then a weird blank spot down to the waist.

to be honest, unless other are SF members they won't notice.

another option is a low-cut vest.

if your tux/shirt/shoes are right & fitted, you will still look "young & stylish" but classy as well even with a cummerbund.

Very wrong. I'm already not a fan of the exposed waistband, but with a bib-front, it's seriously sloppy. If the pants had a high enough rise to show no shirt below the buttoned jacket, you almost might get away with it, but you can never find decent trousers these days. Man up and wear a cummerbund.

No it looks like he's a sloppy twat with his hands in his pockets and his jacket wide open. Any suit jacket, particularly on a formal occasion, should remain buttoned at least while standing so a cummerbund is rarely even visible if worn correctly.

Get a DB dinner jacket and you'll never have to worry about such things.

Worn with SF's favorite mistake, open quarters with low-rise trousers, it will be quite visible. Or, if the cummerbund is not worn, an unsightly flash of shirt to break up the visual, i.e.:

Combined with the comically inept fit, it's a recipe for distaster.

This, however, is excellent advice.

+1. Also, a cummerbund gives a longer and more elegant leg line and if you are svelte, accentuates a trim waist.

You have described yourself as "young and stylish". The fact you have come here for advice also says you are bright and not convinced you know everything yet. :) So understand, there is a world of difference between what is "fashionable" and what has style. The tuxedo is the best tutor for learning this. After attempts at "improving" it, the tuxedo always returns to the same basic "look", or style...because it is the best for it. So, to help you with your query...YES, you really must wear a cummer with any single breasted tux. Just so you understand, the photo of that guy without a waist cover of some sort (other commenter's post here) was taken to show how NOT to look, in I think it was GQ mag about 2011. If you want to be in fashion in the new decade, wear a cummer, and if you want to be stylish in the new decade, again, wear a cummer or deep gorged vest (see Downton Abbey). Watch some of the movies from the 1930's (Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, etc.) and you will see the Golden Age of the tuxedo. Stray very little from this standard and you will always be in style. Here are "Tuxedo Rules" for you today. The fitted look and narrow lapels will be in for a while, me thinks, so a young man can probably go (moderately) that route for the fit. So, with that said.......for single breasted coats, always wear a cummer or vest with a BLACK TIE!....dress it up with a more flamboyant cummer if you like, but wear a self tied black BOW tie. If you choose a DOUBLE breasted coat, and you keep it buttoned at all times, you don't need a cummerbund. And for later in life, to really look stylish AND handsome, wear a nice black tux (single breasted peak lapel is optimum but notch is acceptable) with a bib-front, detachable wing-collared shirt (usually pricey but you'll get 20 years out of it if you keep fairly SLIM, Mr "Stylish....lol). Shawl coat lapels are nicer in double breasted, and lend a slightly less formal feel. And if you ever need a "white dinner jacket" for the tropics or hot summers, buy an IVORY jacket (bright white is for food waiters), and only wear a normal "turn down" collar and a cummerbund. White jacket is not for a stiff bib type wing collar. The idea of the white jacket is comfort, not the height of formality. I hope this helps you. Good luck with your choices. :)
