I have some EG shows in black that are a little beat up but nothing serious. I want to polish the shoes but I think they need a good leather cleaner first. Is Lexol still a good brand to use? I think I can find Lexol locally...

Is there a recommended process for the cleaning part of a good shine?

I did order some Saphir polish and brushes today from Franco's.

Lexol is good stuff. Rub some on, wait a minute or two, rub off. Some here use acetone to really take off the accumulated polish, but I've never tried it myself.

I use both the Lexol cleaner and conditioner. The cleaner does a pretty decent job removing wax build up but with some elbow grease. I use a toothbrush with soft bristles. After wiping off all the cleaner, I let the leather dry for a bit and apply the conditioner. Apply conditioner to all the uppers. I find lightly rubbing in the conditioner on the crease areas softens them and smoothens out the leather a bit. After this I allow the shoe to dry for a day and then I apply a light coat of shoe cream and finally finish off with wax.

I clean and condition my shoe roughly every month.

Replace the acetone with rubbing alcohol.
