Most quality dress socks are being made in England and Italy. Some time ago I remember seeing a reference to a company making socks that attempt a comparable quality at a much lower price. The selection was limited, I think only including solid-colored items. I believe that the manufacture was in Turkey, though this memory might be inaccurate.

Is anyone aware of any firm or source roughly matching this description (even if it might not be specifically the one that I recall).

I think you might have seen Viccel mentioned: https://www.viccelshop.com/

I believe they are Turkish. No experience with the socks, but I've heard they're good value for money.

Both of the above references are useful, as would be any others that might be forthcoming, and it was Viccel that I was trying to recall, a Turkish firm, according to the web site.

I was desperately looking through old bookmarks and searching forums, leading me to discover the futility of a web search with key words "turkey" and "socks", unless someone is predisposed to favor images of socks with turkey prints.

Viccel has nice socks, though I found they wear out often in the heel with very frequent use. Or maybe I washed them bad. I like the designs. Southern Scholar makes some nice socks too and meschaussettesrouges

Agree that the OP is probably thinking of Viccel. I have a couple pair and they've worn nicely for me.
Another brand that has been mentioned on SF that seems to have good cost/quality ratio is Pedemeia from Portugal.
