Quality slim ties?

Hi everyone,

I currently own several Oxxford, Kiton, and two Hermes ties. Most of them range between 3.25 to 4 in. at widest point, with Hermes being the slimmest. I would like to start wearing slimmer ties, maybe at 3.25 inches and smaller, and perhaps dip down to 2.25 inch across. Does anyone here have any recommendations? I'd like to shop online due to the convenience for these. PM me if you know a good source.

It sounds like you already have some very high quality ties, so why not have your existing ties narrowed? I understand it's a simple process and msot competent tailors can do it cheaply.

If you do want to get something new take a look at Barney's Co-op. Check out the house brand and Band of Outsiders. I think Steven Alan also makes some cool skinny ties.

At the Nordstrom sale, going on now, there are some nice slim ties from Boss in an array of dark colors and patterns. I know Boss doesn't have the best rep, but I've always liked their ties. At $65/ea. you could do worse.

J.Crew, Brooks Brothers, Polo, and even Target carry slim ties. I've noticed the upper echelon tie-makers cut theirs fairly wide (3.5 to 4.0 inches as you noted) so it all depends on what you consider "quality." I own a few from all of the above they're fine.

Tiecrafters can narrow any tie.

Many J.Press ties are 3.25"

RL Black Label ties are 3"

Drakes has some narrower ties.

Custom made ties from a company like Sam Hober can be made to any width.

Google for the websites.

J Crew and Banana Republic both have narrow 2.75" ties that are worth it when they're on sale for $30-40 if you're looking for a less expensive option. I personally scour thrift stores to find vintage narrow ties, which are sometimes in mint condition, so it's worth it to take a look sometime.

I'd echo PandA's choice, based purely on the great Penguin Original ties he sometimes wears in the WAWT thread. They seem a very nice blend of being modern without being in-your-face.

Brands I like for skinny/narrow ties (not sure where you find on line, but Google can help):
Band of Outsiders (the skinniest, and hardest to pull off in an office I have found)
RLBL
RL Rugby
Psycho Bunny (available at Barneys - kind of pricey, but I love them)
e-bay for vintage

Look for vintage new old stock ties by Hardy Amies and Briar if trolling ebay for narrow ties.

Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers. I have several and enjoy them with my slimmer lapel jackets. Retail is $150.00 thus, I suggest waiting until BB is having a 25% event to purchase them.

I'd second Olch as above, also Zileri has come out with some very nice slim ties at 2.25 lately.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
